Impact of Pollution on the Hyde Park Micro-Ecosystem Located In Boston Impact of Pollution on the Hyde Park Micro-Ecosystem Located In Boston Air pollution from the automotives from Boston city poses the greatest pollution threat for this micro-ecosystem in which air pollution threatens the existence of some species in the ecosystem. The effects of air pollution on the Park’s biota are likely to be subtle and elusive owing to the existing interactions among the various micro-ecosystem biotic and abiotic components.

The effect of air pollution can be propagated through different ways including the interactions among air-pollution-plant species and insects in which plant species are likely to be weakened by stress associated with air pollution such as changes in atmospheric air composition (Nadakavukaren, 2011). Pollution can enhance susceptibility of native plant species by pests such as bark beetles which threaten the survival of such plant species. Air pollution also has the potential to impact on the native plant species through increasing their susceptibility to root system diseases and invasions by root fungi.

The pollution can directly and indirectly result in reduction in insects and other small animals dependent on the native plant species to decline significantly. The negative effects on the park health, elevated concentrations of ozone and high levels of nitrogen and sulfur deposition may have disastrous consequences for overall biodiversity and health of the micro-ecosystem. On the other hand solid matter pollution in the micro-ecosystem is likely to impact negatively on the Park’s micro-ecosystem through potential fires which threaten the micro-ecosystem’s biodata, as breeding of insects and small animals in the waste that may threaten the survival of the micro-ecosystems components including destruction of the vegetation cover (Nadakavukaren, 2011).

Accumulation of solid waste in this micro-ecosystem may trigger changes in the relationship among various ecosystem components as well as triggering stress among the ecosystems leading to increased death. Such waste materials are likely to increase the population of insects and small animals leading to imbalances in the micro-ecosystems as well as the surrounding macro-ecosystem. Some solid wastes may also contain toxic substance or chemical which may threaten the survival of vegetation cover, insects and small animals in the micro-ecosystem.

The other major type of pollution includes noise pollution which may impact on the micro-ecosystem through disruption of already established interactions. Birds living within the Park may migrate to other peaceful ecosystems to evade noise pollution from the City. This will lead to increase in pests which were previously controlled by the birds leading to consequent negative impact on the micro-ecosystem vegetation cover. Noise pollution has the potential to disrupt the current food chain in the micro-ecosystem leading to significant imbalance in the ecosystem thereby threatening its sustainability (Nadakavukaren, 2011).

Water pollution could also affect the micro-ecosystem through induction of changes in the vegetation cover as a result of increased nutrients as well as emergence of new plant specifies especially invasive species which threaten the existing vegetation cover. Small animals depended on streams running through the park for drinking water may also be affected by toxins in the polluted waters. These forms of pollution have the potential to extend into the macro-ecosystem replicating similar consequences leading to negative implication of the surrounding ecosystems as well as at the global level.

Some of the issues that may arise from the various forms of pollution at the micro-ecosystem including global warming effects at the global level, respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive disease, and waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid. Public health care officials can address such problems through creation of awareness and education of the surrounding communities and initiating pollution mitigation programs in conjunction with environmental conservation agencies.
