For this reason, there is a link between leadership, employee motivation and job satisfaction. Leaders play a significant role in providing employees with empowering experiences. A leadership approach to empowerment centers on the leader who revitalizes his subordinates to perform with the leader furnishing them with a future vision. Accountability, delegation of powers, encouragement, participative decision making and information sharing are identified as the leadership traits that empower people (Mester et al., 2003). In this regard, the leadership style affects an employee’s attitudes and performance.

A leadership style is the approach and manner of motivating people, providing direction and adopting plans. The autocratic leadership style practiced by the California Hospital Medical Center supervisors affects the employee’s attitudes, job satisfaction and motivation. The domineering supervisors of California Hospital Medical Center believe that the only way to get things done is through penalties such as reprimanding employees in front of others and yelling at them. Arguably, they believe they can only increase their authority by frightening everyone into higher levels of efficiency.

On the contrary, this approach leads to decreased morale and lower productivity (Mester et al., 2003). . Lack of rewards demoralizes employees and leads to low employee productivity (Mester et al., 2003). A leader should create an environment and consciousness which employees identify with and feel a part of. An employee’s morale towards his job affects his or her Job satisfaction. Job satisfaction refers to employee perceptions towards his or her job. Job satisfaction is a sentimental response to a job that is an outcome of an individual’s assessment of the results with those that are anticipated, deserved or desired.

A survey conducted by Menon (2001) determines that employee empowerment of leads to high job satisfaction. Employee empowerment relates to increased job satisfaction and employee productivity. Debatably, empowerment leads to a decreased tendency to leave the organization. For this reason, the domineering leadership style of the California Hospital Medical Center supervisors may lead to lack of job satisfaction, decreasing employee productivity and the propensity of the employees to leave the organization.

Moreover, the lack of involvement in decision making also affects job satisfaction. Empowerment and motivation create situations necessary to fabricate organizational commitment. Organizational commitment refers to the psychological relationship between the organization and the employee which makes it less likely for the employee to leave the organization at will (Menon, 2001). The lack of motivation and empowerment by the California Hospital Medical Center does not create conditions necessary to build commitment among the employees and this increase the employee’s propensity to leave the organization.
