In each chapter, the author shares his realizations and teachings based on his ordinary personal experiences and on his missionary trip all in over a hundred countries worldwide. Spreading God’s Word George Miley emphasized the different concepts of ‘people’ and ‘nation’, being the place where the people live (36). Since the bible says that the purpose of God is to bless all nations (Miley 36), then as missionaries, it is important to bless all people. He also noted that God has called people to join him in his work (Miley 38); therefore, it is sufficient to say that in order to bless people, missionaries must do God’s work.
Further, in order to pursue the work of God, Miley (38) cited the verse from Matthew 28:19, saying that God calls missionaries to go and become disciples of all nations. He encouraged the founding of churches that would represent the kingdom of God in many countries. However, he noted that these churches should possess certain characteristics in order to effectively impart the teachings of God in different places. Two of these characteristics pertain to the culture upon which the church will be founded.
As an example, he mentioned that there are churches in India founded in Hindu and Muslim backgrounds such that there are practices being performed in cultural Indian ways (Miley 39). The author did not seem to be against it for he noticed that people are actually enticed to know Christ more because the idea of the church is relevant to their culture. Moreover, in line with blessing all people, the author points to the need of reaching even those who are unreached which he defined as those who are non-believers and do not have their own group of missionaries to further spread the belief (Miley 40).
As such, he encouraged the church to prioritize these people. In doing so, it is important to assess the needs of these people and to understand the diversity of characteristics and culture (Miley 49). Based on this evaluation, churches have to be planted in these unreached communities, paying attention to an important characteristic of the church being culturally relevant. The Mission of the Church. As mentioned, sharing the word of God requires reaching out. Unfortunately, many Christian believers do not leave their homes to spread the word (Miley 51).
In response to this matter, Miley encourages the church to actively participate in spreading the word. The church plays an important role in blessing all nations. It should serve not just as a centre of mission but also as an implementation. By implementation, Miley emphasized that those people working for the church must be developed and sent out to the community (51). In developing the people of the church, it is important to assign them to different roles which extend beyond merely preaching. In unreached communities, missionaries can perform other roles which are still in the line with pursuing God’s purpose – for example, teaching, healthcare, researching, learning, consulting, etc.
(Miley 52). The ability to perform these roles is blessed by God to the believers and it is their responsibility to share these spiritual gifts with people who did not receive them because they failed to accept them. Hence, Miley (52) believes that the best way to share is to work with groups and be a part of the community. In this way, people will be able to share gifts, teachings and thoughts with each other – things by which God’s church becomes functional.
The local church is just a structure representing the kingdom of God. It is in this structure that churchmen learn the teachings of God. Yet the author implies that these teachings should not remain inside. Spreading the word is the real essence of sharing the kingdom. Therefore, it is in the hands of the churchmen to share God’s kingdom to places where it is not found. No one can take the ministry as their own (Miley 52). After all, it cannot function alone. The ministry belongs to all people;
There is still much to learn about the book yet it seems important to emphasize the two elements that are often overlooked in today’s modernized society: the unreached societies and the church itself. Nowadays, churchmen remain inside the church, preaching and caring for the physical structure. Yet, they fail to realize that the church is just a representation because the real kingdom of God has to be experienced by all people even those outside the church. Every person who believes and has the potential to believe should have access to the word of God. The mission begins outside reaching far, unreached places where the kingdom is much needed.
