There are factors that affect Solid waste management policy implementation and, more so in tourist destinations. These factors include chronic support and funding and support problems (Asian Institute of Technology, 1998). This research will focus on solid waste management in tourist destinations in Thailand. Proper waste management is essential in the protection of the environment along with the health of human beings within the area. Preservation of natural resources is dependent on the effective management of solid waste.

The dangers of unmanaged solid waste surpass effects on the ground environment and affect even the atmosphere. When solid waste or organic waste decomposes, certain atmospheric gases are emitted, and they affect the environment. Methane is one of these greenhouse gases and, it contributes to atmospheric pollution as well as climate change. Solid waste management needs to encompass numerous activities including landfilling, composting, waste prevention, and recycling. Policies that combine these activities have a better likelihood of succeeding in the long term.

This means that the waste management project can sustain itself. This is known as integrated solid waste management. Background of the Green Island project Koh Samui, in addition to being the third largest island in Thailand, is a major attraction for tourists. It also faces significant challenges due to ineffective garbage management and garbage disposal. The majority of waste in Koh Samui is derived from hotels and resorts on the island. Accordingly, this has put great pressure on water resources, solid waste management, and other environmental management functions, prompting the government to take initiatives aimed at promoting environmental conservation on the island.

It is estimated that 130 tons of waste are produced every day, yet the refuse facilitates have only a 12-ton daily capacity. The Green Island Project is not only expected to improve environmental conditions in Koh Samui but it definitely marks the beginning of sustainable environmental conservation for the island.
