Understanding Mystery from the Perspectives of the Bermuda Triangle When one thinks about the mysteries in this universe, the myth of Bermuda Triangle, which still remains shrouded in the secrecy, comes to mind. The very name brings to memory a sense of intrigue at first and then the inkling that the mystery has been resolved. Therefore, Bermuda Triangle will serve as an interesting premise to examine and understand the term mystery. What is the mystery, after all, with the name Bermuda Triangle? This stretch of the Atlantic Ocean has its “apex near Bermuda and the curved bottom extending from lower Florida past Puerto Rica, curving south and east through the Sargasso Sea, then back again to Bermuda” (The Bermuda Triangle, p.1). The mystery surrounding this busy sea-route derives from the fact that many ships as well as airplanes, passing through this have been reported to have disappeared without trace. Thus, it becomes an intriguing proposition to evaluate the mystery that surrounds the Bermuda Triangle to understand the term mystery. The subject of the mystery is not the Triangle as such, which is naturally formed and is a physical place, not a figment of imagination. Due to the mysterious incidents of disappearances that occurred in the area some people also call it the Devil’s Triangle. No US government file has identified the location of Bermuda Triangle or for that matter, the Board of Geographic Names. However, the name continues to serve as a synonym for mystery, due to various instances of reported missing of ships entering the area of airplanes flying over the triangle. It adds to the element of mystery that no probable logical cause can be assigned to such disappearances. Thus, from the episodes of disappearances attributed to the Bermuda Triangle, which are beyond any reasonable explanation, it can be construed that a mystery is something that is beyond the scope of logical explanations. The geographical positioning of the Bermuda Triangle, as per existing interpretations, is off the Southeastern coast of the United States in the Atlantic Ocean, with its vertices touching Bermuda, Miami, Florida, and San Juan, Puerto Rico, roughly grounded in 500,000 square miles (Obringer, 2012). The name “Devil’s Triangle” is associated with Bermuda because once it has been known as “the Isle of Devils.” The reefs surrounding the area are quite tricky to the sailing ships, resulting in the wreckage of many and, thus, the place acquired the notoriety associated with its name. However, in the case of Bermuda Triangle, there is logic for the disappearance of the ships in the sea that comprises this area, which constitutes the mystery. Thus, in this context, mystery can be perceived any events that occur in a specific place, for which no reasonable logic can be offered. An object or a string of events surrounding it becomes a mystery when the logic behind extra-ordinary happening near that object is not cross-checked, and rumors take a full circle, thus, making people believe in their validity. The same is the case with the Bermuda Triangle where, it is stated that not only ships, but aircrafts also have disappeared while passing over the mysterious region, called Bermuda Triangle. The intrigue in these episodes derives from the fact that so far nobody, including the scientific fraternity, has been able to provide any reasonable or logical explanation of the phenomenon. It further adds to the element of mystery that remains of the wrecked ships have not been traced. Thus, from the events surrounding the Bermuda Triangle remains enshrouded in secrecy, which exemplifies the concept of mystery. On the other hand, the reports of sinking ships have not been authenticated by official confirmation through government bodies such as the US Coast Guard, which finds nothing unusual about ships sinking in a particular area of the ocean. It seems that the media has been trying to exploit the situation for creating sensation for the furtherance of their interests. A deeper analysis of the past happenings leads to the belief that imagination has been allowed to flutter its wings in the air freely, as no serious attempts has been taken to stop the propaganda. Ship wrecks surrounding the Bermuda region have also been linked to alien abductions or giant octopuses. However, a research study conducted on marine accidents by Norman Hooke for Lloyd’s Maritime Information Services, rejects the existence of any such mystery over the Bermuda Triangle. The evidence emerging from this study attributes the accidents caused to bad weather conditions. Further investigations have also proved that some major casualties had taken place, but these occurred far away from the Bermuda Triangle (Obringer, 2012). Other scientific evidence, based on computer aided research of ocean floors, reveals that huge methane gas explosions has been taking place under the sea-bed, specifically over the Bermuda Triangle region, which seems to be more convincing. However, more evidence is required to believe in the scientific theory of the sudden eruption of methane gas in the form of a mega-bubble, not only swamping ships but extending to the sky, with the potential to engulf airplanes flying high in the air (Cat, 2010). The scientific base of the methane gas bubble is that when a ship comes in the contact of the methane mega-bubble, it loses its buoyancy and sinks to the bottom of the ocean. Besides, if the circumference of the bubbles is large enough and it is sufficient in density, the methane bubble can also suck aircrafts to the bottom of the sea without creating a system alert. A possible explanation is that aircrafts engulfed in the methane bubble stops the engine, and perhaps inflames the methane around, causing instant loss of flight, as the airplanes fall into the ocean. The scientific explanation of the mystery surrounding Bermuda Triangle seems to be doubtful in the absence of any reliable reports of ships and airplanes almost engulfed by such a bubble. Where are the witness details of such a disaster averted to create belief? So, it is not easy to believe in the methane story until there is concrete evidence that the bottom of the sea-bed carries hidden bubbles of methane gas that can be the cause of the missing ships and airplanes. How it is that methane gas bubble gets formed only at the Bermuda Triangle? Besides, it is also not clear why the remains of the wreck of the ships and planes have not been found. Thus, even the scientific theory seems to demonstrate an element of mystery. From the evidences that have come forth during various researches, it appears that there is no such logic in the scientific theory and one cannot believe that this route is safe for sailing ships, as is evident from various reports. On the other hand, one cannot construe that a mythical element contributes to the mysterious disappearance of ships and aircrafts in the area. In the absence of substantial evidence to validate either version, the intrigue continues.
