1. Embrace your Shake by Phil Hansen
Immediate Response to the First Viewing
The first thing that came in my mind after viewing the video is that that speaker is quite influential for the audience since he is inspiring them through his personal experience. The attentiveness of the audience shows that the speech is motivating. He is using humor to increase the performance of his speech. Humor also allows the audience to feel free to express themselves. He is using different videos and pictures to grasp people’s attention and also to add creativity to his speech.
Introduction
The speech starts with Phil Hansen telling the audience about how in art school he developed a tremor due to complete nerve damage and he couldn’t even draw a straight line due to which his dream of becoming an artist was destroyed and he had to leave art school.
Body
He went to a neurologist for his tremors and his neurologist told him to embrace his current stage and so he decided to continue making art with by embracing his shakiness in his hands. By embracing his limitation he become more creative and started making different forms of art.
Conclusion
We should learn to be creative within the boundaries of our limitations and in this way we can transform ourselves and the world around us.
Description of Language in Speech
The language of the speech is simple and clear as he is pronouncing the words in a correct and simplistic manner. He is expressing his views with great emotions which make his speech effective. His use of metaphors and personification adds fire to his speech. I think at some point his delivery picks up pace which shows he is getting nervous. Throughout, he is seen trying to persuade and inspire people through his speech by telling them about his personal experiences. He is making uses of visual aids to grab the attention of his audiences and is seen using different pace of tone at different situations.
Description of Speaker’s Physical Delivery
The delivery of speech by the speaker was found quite interesting by the audience. The speaker engaged his audience by making eye contact with them which made interaction with the audience more successful. He also made gestures with his hands and face and made sure his facial expression matched his tone which is another factor for a good speech delivery. His posture and stance was found appropriate which made the difficult conversations flow more easily. Finally, he was quite clear in his conversation and pronounced the words correctly.
Description of Speaker’s Connection to the Audience
I think the most important factor which connects the audience with the speaker is the subject of the speech. The audience also finds the speech appealing because the speaker is talking about his own life experience. He gives them real life examples which the audience find quite motivational. Phil Hansen talks about how he had to quit his art school because of his tremor but his neurologist suggested him to embrace his shake. After that he followed his dream of becoming an artist despite of his tumor, and did very well. He makes the use of curvy lines instead of dots to make art and turned his weakness into his strength[Emb13].
2. A Promising Test for Pancreatic Cancer From a Teenager
Immediate Response to the First Viewing
The first response that comes in my mind after watching the video is that the speaker is keen to know about cancer and therefore is using different search engines to find out about cancer. The large number of the audience shows that the speech was inspiring and attention-grabbing. The speech is about how a teenager found out a hopeful test for cancer with help of internet. The reaction of the audience shows that they find the speech motivating and interesting.
Introduction
In the starting of the speech Jack Andraka is telling us about his uncle who lost his life because of pancreatic cancer. He moves on by telling us how with the help of internet he found out that most cases of cancers are detected late mainly because the tests used for the detection of cancer are very expensive.
Body
Jack decides to make a sensor for the detection of cancer which would be inexpensive and rapid. He discovered a protein which was found in high quantity in cancer patient which is named as mesothelin.
Conclusion
After great struggle he was finally able to make a sensor for the detection of cancer using a paper, nanotubes, and antibodies.
Description of Language in Speech
The language that is used by the speaker in his speech is quite clear and easy to understand. His tone of speech is moderate and he is quite fluent in his speech. One of the best things about his speech is that he gave different references from the internet which attracted the people of our generation since the present generation uses internet to get knowledge about almost everything.
Description of Speaker’s Physical Delivery
The speaker tries to communicate with the audience in an effective manner by making use of gestures, eye contact and movements of his hands which shows that the speaker has good communication skills. Eye contact during the speech also conveys interest and inspires the audience to be interested in the speech. It is said that our body language matters more than our words during a speech. The speaker had an appropriate open posture which is important for a good speech.
Description of Speaker’s Connection to the Audience
One of the way by which a speaker connects with the audience is through the internet. Jack Andraka uses internet as a tool to find out about pancreatic cancer. He uses different examples and references from the internet for the audience, which the audience found quite informative and practical. The topic of the speech was another way to connect with the audience. The reason why the audience took interest in his speech was because everyone is curious to know about the promising test alternatives of cancer detection[Jac131].
