The Literary styles used in the passage do not bring clearly the picture of the situation. The excerpt, “This silence, continuing like a  corridor,  carried  Gabriel back to the silence that had preceded his birth in Christ,” illustrates this postulation. First, the sentence is the beginning of a paragraph yet it opens with the word “This” which may easily confuse the reader because the reader may not know exactly which silence the author is referring to. Secondly, the simile “Like” silences to a corridor, but the structure of the organization of the expression leaves a blank in knowing what is subject to comparison. In other words, the current silence is compared to another silence that happened during the birth of Christ. However, the author achieves personification as a style because he says “the silence carried Gabriel.” In summary, the passage contributes towards making religion a theme of the story.
