Harriet Beecher Stowe Harriet Elizabeth Beecher Stowe was an American and social activist who fought for abolitionism. During her life, she published more than thirty books, but it was her novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin that brought her world-wide fame and recognition.Beecher Stowe was born on the 14th of June, 1811, in Litchfield, Connecticut, the United States, to the deeply religious family and was the seventh child out of thirteen. She was educated at the Litchfield Female Academy and the Hartford Female Seminary.

When the family moved to Cincinnati in 1832, she entered Lane Theological Academy and the Semi-Colon Club where she met her future husband, Calvin Ellis Stowe. They married in 1836 and moved to Brunswick, Maine (Hedrick). Beecher Stowe and her husband were politically active people who shared a belief in the necessity of abolition. To express all her thoughts on slavery, Beecher Stowe wrote her Uncle Tom’s Cabin, which was first published in 1851 in the National Era and became a best seller in a year ("Harriet Beecher Stowes Life").

After the success of the novel, she continued writing as well as struggling with societal problems. More specifically, she wrote a lot of essays, stories, textbooks, and novels, such as Palmetto Leaves, The Minister’s Wooing, Dred, and Old Town Folks; none of her works, however, was not as popular as Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Also, Beecher Stowe was one of the first editors of Hearth and Home magazine and one of the establishers of the Hartford Art School ("Harriet Beecher Stowes Life"). After the death of her husband in 1886, her health started declining.
