It consists largely of oral or literary works in which language is used in a manner that is felt by its user and audience to differ from ordinary prose (poetry.org)”. But more than creating a literary work that is composed of a prose that rhymes, poetry is man’s beautiful expression of himself as he attempts to communicate himself to the world that suddenly his audience are able to relate to him through the use of the written words. Through poetry, the otherwise inane and mundane things became beautiful and interesting that man suddenly begun to appreciate beauty and understand another.
As Percy Bysshe Shelley would put it “Poetry lifts the veil from the hidden beauty of the world, and makes familiar objects be as if they were not familiar” (642). Fiction on the other hand is a narration of a story based on made up information. It is an imaginary narration of events that gives insights into the workings of human reality or human condition (Indiana University Press). The story, including the characters, plot and circumstances are not necessarily to be factually true. Fiction may not be factually correct but it gives us a glimpse of human emotion that seeks to be understood by others.
In short, fiction is merely an act of telling a story (Currie 385). Foster summed it up that fiction is for delight and instruction (142) used to elaborate and explore human experience for others to understand and feel what we feel and connect to others in multitude. Poetry and fiction are therefore mediums of which we speak and understand our humanity. Exercising the faculty or the medium that reiterates our humanity does not need timing. It is insensitive to modernity or any phase of time in history.
It always matter in our world regardless if we are in the modern age or antiquity. For as long as we feel and express, poetry with always matter.
