The audience, as lovers, in his perspective, their united bonding and time spent together is more important; contesting the common adage that the sun is the centre of the universe. For Donne, he stressed in the poem that the sun’s mere purpose is to give warmth to the world; yet, at that particular moment, the sun should not interfere with the lovers’ shared warmth - for within their room and bed, the sun is a mere intruder.
Another poem entitled Air and Angels (Donne, Air and Angels) by Donne talked predominantly about the essence of love seemingly being analogous to air and angels in terms of having no physical form, yet being needed and sought, like air. Likewise, love was also apparently being transfixed as more than superficial by asserting characteristics that share the ethereal qualities of an angel. Readers could also interpret that somewhere between the lines, Donne had acknowledged that love, although abstract, is commonly expressed by men, who perfectly signify the true embodiment of love.
