Silence - Book Report/Review Example

Going through the manners in which this motif is incorporated is essential for further understanding of the concept. The author of Ethan Frome, Edith Wharton had initially hinted that the main concept that she intended to portray in the book is the life of a laid-back character that was not very social. This consequently had her have the setting of the book at some hills. Hills are often silent and do not have many people. This issue initially portrayed the motif of silence from the setting as in those areas the person did not have many people to talk with except for close family.

Silence is portrayed in the book where the author states that a person had to have immense strength in order to survive in the cruel weather that Ethan lived in. There is analysis of a period where Ethan was all alone and did not have someone to talk to at all from the fact that the area he was in a house alone in the winter. Winter is characterized by immense cold weather where people freeze and thus have to engage in various activities with friends hoping to find ways to eliminate the cold.

In the book, Ethan did not acknowledge many people around and thus did not attempt engaging in many discussions with them despite the cold season and many of them meeting up for energy generating activities (Wharton 56). The book states that in the cold weather, Ethan engaged in small conversations with his wife’s cousin, Mattie. These small talks were to fill the vacuum around them. Ethan however had a deep internal voice where he saw many things going on in society and wished he would speak out concerning them.

However, Ethan was more of a person who noted issues around him and rather than addressing them, he would keep his ideas locked up in his head and did not discuss them with anyone.
