Furthermore, in this particular situation the burden of miscommunication lies solely on the caller as it was her responsibility to provide the requisite information including name, date/time of call, issue, and number at which the patient could be reached.

However, since the clinic is acting as a primary healthcare provider, it should be incumbent upon them to track the calls they receive so that if such a similar situation should arise in the future, the staff would be able to meet the needs of the patient regardless. Additionally, it is also worth noting that it would also be incumbent upon the patient to seek to reach the clinic again during operating hours as an issue as serious as health care cannot be dependent upon an automated answering service.

Should the issue have been an emergency, the patient could have reached the on call physician.
