? Question 8 TO BE Corrected The most important mistakes are spelling and word order mistakes. To address the mistakes, I will use two games for eachbased on vocabularies of a family. For spelling mistakes, family associated words expected not to miss in a beginner’s paragraph on a family will be used. The games are “flash cards” and “spelling contest”. The flash cards will have the following words: family, father, mother, doctor, house, daughter, hospital, driver, school, kitchen, teacher, table, gate, and pet. Spelling contest will be between two teams contesting on the spelling of the words directed by the teacher. Flash Cards spelling game The game is played by giving each student a flash card. Each student should read out the word in his/her flash card and pick a volunteer to spell the word. The student who spells the word correctly becomes the next person to present. The game continues and only stops when all students have presented their words and correct spellings are done on each word. The teacher should first arrange the students to sit in a circle. Second, the teacher will issue each student with a unique flash card, which should not be shared with the neighbor. Third, the teacher should explain the game to the student and make sure that they understand the game. To start the game, the teacher will pick one flash card with a word “cupboard,” read the word aloud, and invite volunteers to spell the word. The picked student is supposed to spell the word without making any mistake within 10 seconds. If the picked student makes a mistake, another student among the volunteers will be picked until the word is spelled correctly. The student who gets the spelling right becomes the next one to present their word. The next student reads out the word in his/her flash card and invites volunteers to spell the word. The student with the correct spelling becomes the next one to present. The process continues to the point where all students have presented their words and the words have been successfully spelled. To wrap up the game, each student in the circle will read and spell out aloud the words on their flash cards. Through the activity, every student will have an opportunity to revise spelling on words related to family. Spelling Contest The game is played by having two teams contesting on spelling instructed words. Each team has equal opportunities to spell the words apart from when one team fails and the word has to be spelled by the other team. Each team has 10 seconds to spell the word which when it lapses, the next team gets the opportunity to spell the word. Each correct spelling earns the team 5 points where the team with the highest points wins the game. The teacher will first divide the class into team A and team B to contest on the spelling of 14 words he/she will instruct. The words are children, parents, compound, car, kitten, puppies, carpet, television, bedroom, grandfather, grandmother, home, brother, and sister. Second, the teacher should give instructions on how the game is played by use of an example of a word like “uncle.” The teacher reads out a word and chooses a team to spell the word in 10 seconds. If the team fails, the second team gets the opportunity to spell the same word which becomes a plus for the team if they get the spelling right. Each team gets seven opportunities to spell a word, meaning the teacher will pick the teams in an alternating manner. The teacher starts the game by asking team A to spell the word “children.” If the team A spells the word correctly, the teacher reads the second one and asks team B to spell. The game continues and only stops when all words have been spelled correctly. The team with the highest scores becomes the winner of the game. To address sentence structure mistake, “Cut-up sentence Kabadi” and “Add a word” games will be used. In both activities, students will get a chance to interact with sentences while making corrections on them where necessary. Cut-up sentence Kabadi The game is played by having two teams contest arranging cut-ups from two simple paragraphs on a family. The cut-ups should be placed on a table in front of the class where a couple of students, each one from each team run to the table, arrange the cut-ups into a correct sentence without breathing in. To avoid breathing in, participants continually repeat the word “kabadi.” If breathing in happens, the student goes back to his/her team. The game ends when the first team to arrange all the cut-ups makes all correct sentences. The team becomes the winner of the game. The teacher will first divide the class into two teams standing behind a line to contest on word order in a sentence. Second, the teacher should give instructions on how the game is played by picking cut-ups with words like “my father is a doctor.” Third, the teacher should start the game by doing a demonstration with one student. They should both run to the table, arrange the cut-ops into a correct sentence. Once the two are through, the second couple of students should run to the table, make a sentence by use of their cut-ups and leaves. The third pair should follow and so on until the class gets the first team to arrange all their sentences correctly. The game is fun and allows all the students to participate in the activity hence sharpening their skills on word order. Add a Word game The game is played by getting one person who starts the sentence by saying one word. A second student says a word that continues the sentence; the third person says a word that continues the sentence and so on until either someone says a word that does not fit in the sentence grammatically or syntactically or the sentence ends without any error. If the former happens, the game stops and the class discuss the cause of the stop. If the latter happens, the next student says “period” and starts a new sentence with a new word. In our case, the topic will be the family. To start the game, the teacher first gives instructions to the students on how the game is played. He/she arranges the class in a circle to enhance participation from all the students. Next, the teacher suggests the topic by saying, “The topic is family.” The first student continues the game with a word like, “My…” the second student says “….father,” the third student “… is,” the fourth student “…doctor,” the fifth student “…. a”. At this point, the sentence has a wrong order, which calls for a stop and a discussion on why it had to stop. It is expected that students will identify that “a” should come before “doctor.” After the discussion, the next student either continues the sentence or says “period” to start another sentence. The game helps students to identify mistakes on word order and learn where each word falls in a sentence.
