Drainage System and Its Importance
Drainage by definition is the removal of waste water from an area. There are two types of drainage systems in collecting waste water; these are separate sanitary system and combined system. In separate sanitary system, there are two sewers functioning. One sewer collects waste water only coming from the household, commercial and industrial area while the other sewer collects only the storm waste water. On the other hand, combined system collects storm and domestic waste water together and it passes through the same pipe network. My goal in this paper is to bring source that proper and regular drainage system maintenance must be implemented to ensure constant flow of fluid in our drainage system. And prevent the area from future damages that will be caused by waste water overflow because of poor drainage system.
To achieve this goal, I have organized my paper into five main sections. The first section is the problem; this is where the scientific investigation begins. In this section I will deliver my question based on what I have observed in my neighborhood. Second is the hypothesis, hypothesis by definition is a proposed explanation to be the answer of the problem or an educated guess in a form of statement. Third is the experimental design, this where I conduct the experiment to prove if my hypothesis is true or false. Forth is the result, this is where I interpret my data in a form of statement but I do not go into details in explaining my result. And the fifth is the conclusion; this is where I make a statement whether the results of the experiment supported my hypothesis or not. In this section I will also explain the result of the experiment in detail.
PROBLEM
How does unwanted solid waste affect our drainage system?
HYPOTHESIS
When there is less unwanted solid waste in our drainage system, then there will be better flow of fluid in our drainage system.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN
To be able to answer the problem an experiment is set up that can be divided into two individual experiments. The materials needed for this experiment is a piece of one meter transparent hose which will be acting as the pipe in the drainage system, two bottles of water containing one-thousand milliliters each, which will be acting as the waste water or fluid that will be passing through the transparent hose, a funnel which will be acting as an input for the water we will be putting through the transparent hose, one measuring cup and one kilo of soil and stone that would act as our unwanted solid waste. In experiment one; I will hold the transparent hose twelve inches above the ground with the funnel on the tip of the hose. And the other tip of the hose will be inserted in the measuring cup, so that I can measure the amount of water that will come out of the hose. I will take one-forth kilo of soil and stone and put it inside the hose, then I will pour one thousand milliliters of water inside the hose. In experiment two, I will still hold the transparent hose twelve inches above the ground with the funnel on the tip of the hose. And the other tip of the hose will still be inserted in the measuring cup, so that I can measure the amount of water that will come out of the hose. The difference here in experiment two is that I will use the three-fourth kilo left of soil and stone and put it inside the transparent hose. Then I will pour the other bottle of one-thousand milliliters of water inside the hose.
RESULT
In experiment one, the amount of water that was able to reach the measuring cup was seven hundred milliliters. While in experiment two, the amount of water that was able to reach the measuring cup was only four hundred fifty milliliters.
CONCLUSION
My hypothesis was that when there is less unwanted solid waste in our drainage system then there will be better flow of fluid in our drainage system. My results do support my hypothesis because in experiment one, where I only placed one-fourth kilo of sand and stone in the transparent tube, the amount of water that was able to reach the measuring cup was seven hundred milliliters. While in experiment two, where I placed the remaining three-fourth kilo of sand and stone in the transparent tube, the amount of water that was able to reach the measuring cup was only four hundred fifty milliliters. There is a two hundred fifty milliliter difference on the said experiments. Therefore, I conclude that through proper and regular maintenance of our drainage system there will be better flow of fluid if there is less unwanted solid waste in our drainage system.
