Also, separated approaches have been implemented to improve both environmental and production performance, producing only partial solutions to a problem that is integrated in nature. This research aims to integrate both production and environmental dimension of construction systems at a conceptual level using lean production. Lean production principles have been commonly used to manage production waste in manufacturing, and, recently, in construction. In this research, environmental waste will be introduced within the concept of lean.
Then, the environmental waste will be linked to the production waste from the lean perspective. Finally, a theoretical discussion is provided in order to understand the importance of such integration. A conceptual management approach to address the identified environmental waste will be discussed. This theoretical research will allow the integrated management of production and environmental waste to be developed. Also, the proposed management approach will benefit practitioners by allowing them to recognise the causes of environmental waste in regards to the inefficiencies in production. . This fact has been noticed by various countries and government agencies.
To retaliate this cause and effect paradigm, various environmental concepts that focus on the total waste production has already been materialized, developed, implemented and updated from time to time (CIPS, 2007). This paper focuses on the theories that explore the integration of the industrial production with the current concepts of environmental waste management approaches. It discusses the linkage there is between production and environmental waste. It aims to propose some known management concepts that can be applied in various industries in light of creating balance between industrialization and environment aspects through lean production perspective.
LITERATURE REVIEW: The fast paced and continuous exploration for growth, development and expansion has some effects to environment and human health. In most countries, waste generation is coupled with the economic growth. Government and the agencies has done measures in treating and controlling of pollution in maintaining a clean and healthy environment (Progressive Insurance,2005). Various concepts of waste reduction that focus on the environmental impacts have imposed programs in proper waste management.
Lean manufacturing is one of the methods that aims to reduce waste (non-value) and incorporate its underlying principles in various businesses around the world (Womack & Jones,1996). The so called “Lean Production” concepts have been observed to produce results. The principle has been developed originally at the Toyota Motor Company during the post WWII. It has then been known as Toyota Production System, where various managements adapted the
