Engineering technology can be described as being practice-oriented, stressing applications of engineering practice, laboratory experience competencies and engineering design. Looking at these two descriptions, one can note that a potential student will be confused by the overlap in these definitions. Therefore, students end up enrolling in one engineering program only to realize that they wanted to pursue the other. This paper seeks to compare engineering and engineering technology. Comparison First, let us examine the program guide characteristics.

Engineering involves innovators while engineering technology involves doers or implementers. An innovator is an individual who is capable of interweaving knowledge of advanced math, natural and engineering sciences, and engineering principles and practices in solving an existing problem or to create a new product or system. On the other hand, a doer or implementer is an individual who applies the basic knowledge of mathematics, natural and engineering sciences, current engineering practices and an understanding of economic principles in solving a design problem, operating and testing of engineering and manufacturing systems.
