It is divided into two parts with the first part discussing our own learning experiences in this particular unit. The second part gives an insight into my learning experiences in an organization I once worked in. The theoretical framework aimed at explaining the learning process will be utilized to evaluate whether the said organization is a “learning organization” or not. This reflective log will base its discussion on the Experimental learning theory which provides a holistic model of the learning process (Kolb 1984 p. 41). In addition to that, it is a multi-linear model for adult development. Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory is used to analyze one of the lectures presented in this unit with the focus being on the four categories of our learning process as presented by the theory. Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory The holistic model as well as the multi-linear model presented by the Experiential Learning Theory. Are in line with what is known about how individuals grow, learn and develop. The term experiential differentiates this theory from the cognitive learning theories as well as behavioral learning theories. Under the experiential methodology, educators and students engage in direct experiences as well as focused reflections which are all aimed at increasing the knowledge levels, developing skills and clarifying important values (Kolb1984, p. 41). Learning through this process is also known by several; other terms. It is also referred to as learning by doing, learning through action, learning through discovery and learning through experience. Wurdinger and Carlson (2010, p.2) point out that the learning process in most institutions of higher learning are conducted through lectures since only a handful of educators learnt how to use alternative approaches. They point out that faculties should ensure that they involve students in the whole learning process by encouraging group work, discussions as well as application of learnt information outside the normal class scenario. The student forms the main element of experiential learning. In addition to that, the approach asserts that knowledge can only be gained through personal involvement Miller et al 2011, p 19). Experiential learning is different from the traditional classroom approach as it involves the cooperation of students where those involved are able to learn from each other. The instructions utilized in this approach are aimed at making it possible for students to engage in direct experiences that are related to the situations and problems present in the real world. The learning process takes place if experiences are supported by a personal reflection as well as synthesis and critical analysis. The end result of the learning process is personal and would impact future learning as well as experiences (Moon 20011, p 22). The theory is called "Experiential learning" to emphasize the central role that experience plays in the learning process. The Kolb’s learning cycle involves concrete experience, reflective observation, Abstract conceptualization and active experimentation. The reflective log In this reflective log four categories of our learning process are addressed as we analyze a given lecture in the light of Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory (ELT): activity, learning styles, reflections and analysis. The reflective log is presented in a questions-answers structure due to its simplicity to follow. Activity What was the lecture? The lecture was on E-learning and the organization and took place on 25th November 2013 What did you do? In this particular lecture we continued to learn to learn about Kolb’s theory of learning. The class started with the lecture giving handouts to the students. In addition to that, the students were given the chance to point out various definitions in Kolb‘s theory as well as describe the important elements of this approach. The lecturer presented to us some Power Point slides and videos which went further to explain a number of concepts with regard to the experiential learning theory. We were later asked to think about the concepts presented and discuss them in groups of three students. In addition to that, we were required to discuss the impact of ELT on the general learning process. The discussion had to include our work experiences as well as our recent learning experience that did not involve the experiential approach to learning as well as that which included the approach. We were later given a task to build a tower in groups of three, with an independent observer overseeing the process. After completing this particular task, each group was required to review the activity using ELT. Finally, we watched a YouTube video in which people were doing the same activity. Learning Styles The approach applied in this particular lecture made it possible for us to learn a number of important things about ourselves, our studies, significant influences at that particular time as well as significant outcomes. This approach made it possible for group members to interact and learn a number of things about each other. A number of weaknesses as well as strengths about each group member were easy to identify. One of the members in our group had good public speaking skills. His eloquence as well as mastery of the terms and phrases in the English language proved that he was a good public speaker. We agreed in unison that he would be the one to present our groups discussion before the class if called upon. My good writing skills, on the other hand did not go unrecognized. I was given the role of the group’s secretary, a role which I really enjoyed. With regard to our studies, we were able to learn that the approach employed in this particular lecture was really beneficial to both the quick and slow learners. We were also able to point out the relationship between the Experiential learning theory and other theories. We found out that an interesting relationship exists between Kolb’s approach and other behavioral and personality theories. We noted that Kolb’s approach follows from an assertion made by Carl Jung with regard to learning. He points out that the earning approaches people prefer to follow arise from the ways these individuals choose to adapt to the situations around them. The approaches applied in this discussion included both behavioral and experiential. We utilized our past and present experiences to relate various situations that define us. Utilizing this approach, we were able to learn a host of new things about ELT as well as about other group members. Being the secretary of the group, my writing and reporting skills were enhanced since I was able to put them into good use. In addition to that, our skills to relate and cooperate as a group were also enhanced since the group work called for cooperation and understanding among the members. Reflections There was a great feeling of freedom in our group. Different dimensions of the topic under discussion could easily be presented. In addition to that, we also felt a sense of courage since we were able to spit out our thoughts with regard to the issue under review. A feeling of importance and responsibility was also reflected in the way group members tackled the issue. Every member of the group knew that his or her participation meant a lot to the group and that they were responsible for the group’s final outcome. There were a number of things that came into my mind but which I did not speak out. Firstly, I was of the idea that given the structure presented by the experiential learning approach, students play the key role in decision making and that they are responsible for the final results. In addition to that, I thought that the approach makes it possible for different kinds of relations to be natured. Our reflections went on very well as we were able to learn a number of things from each other. One group member reflected how in his working experience, he was given a role he never had prior training or experience in. He pointed out how he had to learn about his new role through the supervisor as well as other senior members of the organization who had passed through the same post. Our learning in this instance was on point and easy to understand. This approach, as opposed to the traditional classroom approach common in my past experiences, focused on the relationship between the students and ensured that all students participated in the learning process. Such approaches make it possible for individuals to better certain skills such as speaking, writing as well as discussing important issues. Through constructive interactions, the approach makes it possible for us to become better at talking as well as interacting with others. Analysis There are a number of important things that were noted in this lecture. Firstly, it made it possible for participants to learn from each other. The direct experiences brought out in the discussion made it possible for the situations to be related with the real problems in the outside world. In addition to that, we noted that the approach is inclusive and makes it possible for all types of students to participate and benefit from the learning process. The lecture could have been undertaken more effectively if the ideas presented by various groups could be shared before final presentation. During this lecture, we learnt that every type of student is able to participate in a constructive discussion if the right conditions are provided. In addition to that, we learnt that each one of us has special skills and talents which when utilized together, could result to greater good. In addition to that, we learnt that life skills can be learnt by anyone who is interested and that they play an important role in shaping our destiny. Decision making, honesty as well as tolerance make it possible for us to choose the right path to follow and determines whether the learning procedure we take will be a success or a failure Conclusion This lecture provided an insight into how the experiential learning framework works. We were able to learn about the numerous benefits the approach comes with. Apart from making it possible for the relationship between students and teachers as well as students and other students to be strengthened, it also makes it possible for all students to participate in problem solving as well as the learning process. This approach can be utilized in future in achieving our targets. As leaders in an organization, training and development forms an important part. Utilizing this approach, whose focus is on adult development, would result to greater benefits at a lower cost. Another important point to note is that our experiences impact our approach to learning and teaching of others. Having experiences in a number of learning approaches makes it possible for one to evaluate and point out the best approach to employ in certain circumstances. We plan to improve our knowledge, skills and attributes as this will make it possible for the evaluation of the different approaches to be made. Reflection of an organization in which I have worked I once worked with a major retailer of petroleum products in the country. My experiences, especially the learning experiences, are worth to note due to the important impact this experience has hard on my learning as well as development. I used to hold the position of a sales supervisor. The position came with a host of responsibilities key among them being able to relate with different clients and customers as well as mastery of the different products offered by the company I was working for. My job was demanding to some extent since I had to move from one place to another and interact with a host of customers, senior company officials as well as junior workers. I had to develop good communication skills as communication played an important role in the position I was holding. When interacting with the company’s clients, I was expected to maintain a respectable and persuasive tone and when it came to interacting with the junior employees, I had to maintain an authoritative tone. Under the capacity I was serving in, I was required to have knowledge of the various petroleum products the company offered. In addition to that, I had to know about the products offered by our competitors and the general trends in the sector and the market. My experiences working with this organization are worth remembering. Not only was I able to develop my leadership skills, but my communication and reporting skills were also enhanced. As a sales supervisor, I was required to monitor and make reports with appropriate recommendations on how the sales process was going on. I was able to learn how to interact with people at different levels. The way one interacts with his seniors is very different from the way one interacts with other workers at his level or below him. Staff training and development schemes were common and used to be done on a quarterly basis. It was necessary for training and development projects to be undertaken on a regular basis given the competitive nature and dynamic nature of this sector. The training and development involved the interaction of senior staff members with junior staff members. Both the set of workers engaged in discussions as well as practical undertaking to show how various issues in the company had to be tackled. Experience used to be emphasized during the training and development procedures with the participants being informed of how the experiences they have shapes their level of participation in the tasks they have to handle. This organization proved to be a learning organization given the approach it employed in enhancing the skills of its employees. The company placed great emphasis on experience as the key to its success. It is important to note that the experiential learning theory also places great importance on experience. Employees were expected to utilize what they have learnt in the tasks they were assigned, In addition to that, we were required to learn from our past mistakes. During the training and development process, key mistakes made by various staff members were pointed out. These mistakes formed the basis of the training. Another important point that supports this organization as a learning organization is that transformation of experiences was acknowledged. The company employed a great number of people who had diverse skills and knowledge. This point to the fact that the company realized that through their interaction, the different types of employees will be able to learn from each other thus drive the company to success. According to the ELT model off learning, the process of learning as well as development requires opposing abilities and skills and therefore, those involved must appropriately chose the situations in which they have to apply the different skills and abilities. Conclusion This reflective log pointed out my experiences in the process of learning as well as career development. The first part first part discussing our own learning experiences in this particular unit while the second part gave an insight into my learning experiences in an organization I once worked in. The main emphasis was on Kolb’s theory of experiential learning and how it has impacted our learning process. The second part points out that the organization I worked in was a learning organization due to the fact that it placed great emphasis on training and development and how these in turn impacts experience. The paper acknowledges the fact that our experiences impact our knowledge and determines how we handle the tasks assigned to us.
