Achieving MSUs goal through own goal and activity For the time I have been studying in the U.S., I have had many interesting experiences, both inside and outside the learning environment, which I are not only connected but also related in the sense that they all contribute towards the achievement of my personal, career and MSU’s goals. I take my work extremely seriously because I am focusing on achieving intellectual, interpersonal as well as personal qualities that would enable me to function effectively as a responsible member of the society, and to contribute successfully to sustainable global development. Besides my academic goals, I am also a well-rounded individual, because I supplement my academic skills with a variety of extra-curricular activities, particularly the basketball sport, because I believe physical fitness is also essential for a healthy body and mind. I plan my studies around my basketball activity, to ensure that I have adequate time both for studying and playing my favorite sport; I strongly believe that my own goals and activity would enable me to achieve MSU’s goal as well as shall be discussed herein shortly. Primarily, my classroom experiences have granted me wonderful learning opportunities; my professor for the ESL course is an amiable individual that often gives us opportunities to express ourselves in class, thereby nurturing our speaking and listening skills at the same time. In that respect, the classroom instruction is directly linked with the MSU goal of promoting effective communication among diverse audiences, thereby bridging communication gaps that often impede information flow and cultural understanding among people of diverse cultural backgrounds. Through classroom speaking tasks and assignments, I have been able to acquire confidence when interacting with my peers in the classroom context, thereby becoming extremely comfortable in peer relationships. I believe with the improvement in my social skills and increased interactions in the classroom. I am capable of achieving the MSU goal of analytical thinking because I can debate effectively in class, thereby contributing to the learning experience. Furthermore, I have been able to improve my English language competence significantly, to be able to communicate effectively with my colleagues, without feeling embarrassed about my poor communication ability, thereby establishing friendships that cut across diverse cultural boundaries. Generally, working alone and in groups to achieve classroom objectives has enabled me to develop critical thinking and analytical skills that enable me to comprehend information and to participate effectively in the learning experiences, thereby fulfilling MCU’s goal. My favorite sport is basketball, which I greatly enjoy playing with my roommate, a native English speaker and my first friend in the U.S.; his passion for the game amazes me, and besides that, he is very sociable. We often play basketball against each other, thereby not only enjoying the sport, but also developing intellectual, interpersonal and personal attributes that are essential for success in life. For instance, playing basketball requires one to be keen and always alert to notice when their opponents are offending, and effective defending often calls for analytic skills to figure out your opponent’s next moves. Through playing basketball I have developed critical analytic skills that would enable me to excel both academically and professionally, thereby achieving MSU’s goal. Furthermore, basketball has enabled me to meet new friends and expand my social circles even further because there are times when we play team fight, which brings together colleagues from everywhere. In my team, I often take the responsibility of organizing my team thereby commanding their attention and respect; this way, I have not only developed effective leadership skills, but also good communication and organizational, which I believe are in line with MSU’s goals. To win points as a team, I have to make sure that my team mates blend effectively and play together cooperatively to score, and this often calls for negotiation, problem-solving, and people-management skills that I have progressively developed in the course of my studies in the U.S; this skills will enable me to achieve MSU’s goals as well. Since all my teammates are individuals from diverse social, cultural and economic backgrounds, each one of them have their own unique ways of thinking and behaving, which means that it requires more tolerance and openness to diverse opinions to get them to play together cooperatively in a team spirit. My passion for basketball has also helped me to broaden my perspective on many things not just in school, but about life in general, thereby increasing my cultural awareness as well as cultural sensitivity, which is particularly important in today’s increasing cultural diversity of global societies. During match days, my roommate and I often go to watch our favourite teams play, Lakers and the Heats respectively, and in doing so, we often bet on the best teams and players; our arguments and debates have given me opportunities to horn my speaking and listening skills immensely. The rich basketball community both at school and outside the school has greatly boosted my cultural understanding of different people, particularly because it has enabled me to interact with people outside my social circles, thereby significantly boosting my confidence and social interaction skills. I am more comfortable with my foreign identity than before, when I was new in the U.S. and always feeling odd like an outsider without any friends in the United States. Interactions with peer both inside and outside the classroom context have enabled me to develop a strong sense of my personal identity and self-worth as an individual, thereby greatly boosting my confidence, which directly impacts positively on my communication and social interaction abilities. Equipped with all these intellectual, interpersonal, and personal qualities, I hope to achieve not just my personal, but also my professional and career goals, thereby becoming an independent and responsible member of the global society. Overall, it is clear that my personal goals and activity are closely related to the MSU’s goals in a complex cause-effect relationship; in that respect, I can fulfil the latter by focussing on, and eventually achieving the former. Precisely, I can state here confidently and without any reservations that I can achieve MSU’s goals through my own goals and activity because they are intricately interrelated and interconnected; in other words, while pursuing my personal as well as academic goals and activity on one hand, I am also fulfilling MSU’s goals on the other hand.
