Review of Educational Research 54 (4), 577-596 In this bibliography, Applebee reflects the relationship between a student’s ability to reason and the amount of writing that they are required to undertake. He develops a convincing research by conducting literature review on recent articles and journals that will enable instructors to implement journal writing to their students. The chapters in this book are a synthesis of inquiries on writing as a method of learning. The results of some case studies reflected that using consistent writing will increase long-term memory of students and they will excel at different assignments depending on how well they will organize the material mentally. The book offers directions on issues relating to problem solving, critical thinking and creativity. Teachers can implement active learning by using this book to get information on previous cases and the results that were achieved. Borasi R & Rose, B. J (1989) Journal writing and mathematics instruction Educational studies in mathematics, 20, 347-365 Borasi and Rose have been focusing on how to improve the college algebra course by introducing journal writing as a means of allowing students to reflect on the contents of the course and encourage them to share their feelings. This article defines the educational value of engaging students to practice journal writing. Its main objective is to show the potential contribution that writing can provide in terms of the student’s writing and communication skills and encouraging independent thinking. A journal writing process designed for classrooms is also presented with other suggestions and recommendations on how to effectively encourage personal writing. The evaluation procedures and design will save instructors time in application and improve student’s participation. This article will offer help to instructors who have not yet adopted the model of journal writing in the classes by simplifying the complexity in introducing students to writing. She argues that writing presents a special way of learning different from reading, talking and listening. In this book, she differentiates the nature of writing from other means of learning while taking note of problems in courses that primarily focus on reading and listening only. The book tries to show how writing is an active learning process by defining it as an organic process that engages a person in whole. The chapters elaborate that writing involves use of the eyes, hands and the brain making it a unique multi-representational mode for learning. In the last chapter, the book relates writing to the journals and notes that are a trail left by engaging in the process. In this book Emig is on the view that writing is an epicenter for academic learning therefore it should be encouraged at all levels of education. Therefore, in order to solve the rigidity in implementing journal writing, they encouraged other teachers in the school to introduce writing skills to students in elementary. The main objective of the book is to provide guidelines for introducing journal writing and what types of writing are appropriate for schools. In the first chapter, the book gives basic information on journals and their importance to active learning. The other chapters, journals are clarified further by their types and the techniques used in introducing journals in different levels of study. However, the sixth chapter tackles how teachers in the elementary classes can encourage journaling and plan for writing activities. This book is good for instructors who prefer introducing writing skills to younger students because they will adapt easily. Kotsokalis, M. L. (2011). Effects of journaling on the perception of the overall course experience of. S.l.: Proquest, Umi Dissertatio. The author conducts a research to analyze the effects of implementing journaling as a teaching mode to students. The book is in proposal format and entails a research conducted on a nursing school that adopted the use of journaling and how the student’s performance changed. The chapters begin with an introduction on journaling and the types of journals that will be investigated. After the research is concluded the findings are shown systematically together with their assumptions and recommendations. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of journaling on the overall nursing course experience. 91 students volunteered to be studied and were divided into experimental and control groups. Evaluation was later done at the end of the semester and no significant difference in outcome was established between the groups. However, the research defines the importance of journaling as used in the teaching mode. This study will enable instructors to know clearly the impact of introducing journaling into their practices. Zinsser, William (1988) Writing to learn. New York: Harper & Row, Publisher, Inc. Zinsser William warns against obscurity of writing journals and note books and states that it is essential in the academic systems. He talks about writing about any topics while using his own experiences and fears as insights. By encouraging writing on areas as mathematic, arts and sciences where writing was ignored, he develops a theoretical emphasis that instructors can use to implement journal writing. The book is divided into two parts. In the first part William explores the relationship between writing and learning as articulated in the book’s thesis. He also provides practical examples of how writing was conducted in technical classes in different universities. In the second part, he conducts an analysis of writing outside the discipline of English. In this part he gives a better understanding of how diversified writing either journals or note books can be.
