Functions of an Educational Administrator Functions of an Educational Administrator Introduction Today leadership has become a very technical phenomenon due to the complexity of social, industrial, or political organization, technological advancement and globalization. Research on exemplary performing schools points out the crucial role that leaders play in establishing and monitoring the school’s quality for all students. This pertains to enhancement of skills and knowledge of the students. One way by which they do this is by creating a culture that accepts the utilization of those skills and knowledge. This paper discusses the role of an educational administrator in effecting culture of change in an educational institution in light of their roles as an entrepreneur, organizer, and instructional leader.
As an entrepreneur, the administrator is charged with the overall activities that take place within the institution (Ojo and Olaniyan, 2008). This includes ensuring that there are enough teachers to cope with the number of students. In case of any shortage, they coordinate with the relevant authority to ensure that the shortage is filled. This ensures that students are provided with quality education at all times. As entrepreneurs, they ensure that teachers report to duty in time without unnecessary absenteeism. They are also charged with ensuring that students are well groomed in terms of discipline. This is mainly because, research shows that good performance is highly dependent on discipline among students. By promoting this culture, in an institution, nothing can bar it from performing well. As entrepreneurs, school administrators also ensure that funds are available to facilitate various activities within the learning institution (Ojo and Olaniyan, 2008). Availability of fund ensures that teaching is not disrupted mid way as this may inconvenience students and teachers in covering the school curriculum in time.
Educational Administrator is also charged with the overall organization of school’s activities and programs. As such, they ensure that the school has adequate resources such as books, educational facilities such as tuition blocks, libraries, and laboratories among others. In case of a shortage, he organizes this with the help of the board to ensure that the school has enough facilities to improve learning among students. As an organizer, an educational administrator is also charged with the role of assisting teachers in achieving their goals for students (Ojo and Olaniyan, 2008). This ensures that teachers dedicate their energy and time to helping the students thus improving the quality of learning within the institution.
Administrational leader plays a vital role in promoting educational culture for meritorious performance among students as an instructor. In this case, he is charged with the responsibility of promoting quality instructions. This pertains to ensuring that there is consistency and coordination of instructional programs and suggesting recommended methods of instructions. He also supervises and evaluates instructions. This is to ensure that school’s goals are practiced at the classroom level and occasionally monitors instructions in the classroom through visits to classrooms. They also allocate and protect instructional time. They do this by giving teachers uninterrupted instructional time blocks and ensuring that basic skills and academic programs are taught (Cow, 1992).
As instructional leaders, they also perform the work of coordinating school curriculum. This involves translating knowledge of curriculum into meaningful curriculum and ensuring that curriculum continues vertically and across levels of grade. Lunenburg and Ornstein (2010) notes that they are also charged with the promotion of content coverage. In this regard, they ensure that content of a specific course is taught in the classroom and extended out of classes through enforcement of homework policies. Finally, as instructional leaders, they monitor progress of students. This may be through tests to evaluate how students are progressing and through these tests; they are also able to modify school goals for better results.
In conclusion, it is only the educational administrators who execute their functions well that reap the benefits of meritorious performance by creating a culture that develop skills and knowledge in an educational set up.
