Since the 1980s, e-learning or the use of information and computer technologies in teaching and learning has dramatically evolved past few years. Aside from discussing the trends and breakthroughs in e-learning, this report also provided a list of advantages and disadvantages when using e-learning.Since the concept of e-learning and brain-based learning has been evolving in the academic world, this report will discuss the importance of integrating the concept of brain-based learning in e-learning, the implications of e-learning for brain-based curriculum, the rationale behind the need to restructure the school curriculum and its design, and the importance of developing and using a set of effective learning criteria within a virtual or electronic learning environment.
E-learning is defined as “the use of information and computer technologies to create a learning experience”. It simply means that electronic learning or e-learning is all about teaching and learning that takes place not only through the use of the Internet but also with other types of electronic technology that can be used in the process of teaching and learning. E-learning can be considered as “technology-driven” learning. Therefore, the term e-learning is often used interchangeably with other similar terms like “technology-enhanced learning”, “distance learning”, or “web-based learning” among others.
As part of the main discussion, the theories and model behind brain functioning will first be provided followed by describing the elements of instruction that increase the brain capacity to learn. Eventually, the evolution of e-learning, trends, and breakthroughs of e-learning, advantages, and disadvantages of e-learning, and the implications of e-learning for the brain-based curriculum will be tackled in detail. After explaining the rationale behind the need to restructure the school curriculum and its design, this report will discuss the importance of developing and using a set of effective learning criteria within a virtual or electronic learning environment.
Before the conclusion, an e-learning assessment model will be presented in this report.
