Cultural Analysis Introduction Culture can be defined as the practices that describe a society and are used to identify people from a region or community. In my understanding, Culture is described by modern events such as fashion, films annual celebrations. However, modernism does not impose truth (Belsey, 126). The film ‘Crossing over’ aims at explaining the diversity of culture brought about by immigrant communities in the United States and its resultant effects. I intend to discuss the controversy between the American culture displayed by films and the real American culture. Film plot Crossing over is a movie that explains the cause of cultural diversity in the American. Many people would do anything to obtain the American citizenship. Crossing over explains the different cultures in America brought about by the immigrants who have settled in various states inside America. It explains how people strive to get through the American border as well as obtain citizenship using their perception of the American culture. The movie explains the perception of the American culture and how it influences the lives of immigrants. The story begins with the deportation of an immigrant by the name Mireya Sanchez from America as she was found to exist illegally in the county. A law enforcement officer by the name Max Broyan chooses to take care of Mireya’s son after her deportation. Later, Brogan realizes that Mireya was murdered at the American boarder during her deportation process. He then chooses to take the bad news to Mexico where Mireya’s parents lived. He travels to Mexico with Mireya’s son with the aim of taking the little boy to his grandparents. The murder case devastates officer Broyan who begins an investigation on Mireya’s murder. The plot continues with the story of a corrupt immigration officer, Cole Frankel who strikes a deal with an Australian woman by the name Claire Shepard. Cole agrees to organize a green card for Claire in exchange for two months of unlimited sex from her. The deal is sealed and Cole begins her sex affairs with Claire. Cole then separates with his wife in order to get into a serious relationship with Claire who eventually declines as this was not part of the deal. Cole organizes the green card for Claire but then ends up in jail after their illegal plan and the corrupt deal is discovered by the authorities. Claire is then deported to Australia while Cole remains in custody as a result of his crimes. Cole’s wife proceeds to adopt a Nigerian child who has been in the detention center for several years. The plot goes on with a South Korean teenager who is in the process of being naturalized to the American society participates in a robbery alongside for four other robbers. Hamid an Iranian business man kills four of the robbers but releases the South Korean teenager. In other scenes, Gavin Kossef is a young British immigrant who pretends to be Jewish in order to get a job in the U.S. Culture interpretation in the film It is to my analysis that U. S culture has been incorporated with many assumptions. This has led to the misinterpretation of the original U.S culture. As a result, this aspect has brought about the violation of the federal law in the aim of blending in the U.S modern culture. Corruption has been implicated as one of the cultures in the United States. The film Crossing boarders displays this assumption as the story rotates around how immigrant acquire citizenship and work permits in the U.S without following the legal procedures. It is due to this factor that I categorize corruption as one of the key factors promoting illegal activities in the United States. Many films display the effects of corruption in the United State as it has evolved from being a habit into a culture. In Crossing over, Cole Frankel is an immigration officer who agrees to be bribed with sex in order to produce a green card for an Australian immigrant. Apart from corruption, immorality is another culture that is displayed by various films linking it to the modern U.S culture. In the film crossing over, we see that Cole is bribed with sex in order to produce a green card for an Australian woman who is illegally in the U.S. Most films associate immorality with the modern American culture as it is also used as a marketing strategy. A film with several immoral scenes is anticipated to perform well in the entertainment market (Decherney, 147). We see violence as another culture displayed by the film crossing over. Immigrants settle in the United State and develop hostile attitudes that lead them to engage in violent activities in the name of survival. This aspect has made violence to evolve from a habit to a culture in the United States (Belsey, 58). The African American, the Latino and the Japanese immigrants are associated with crime and violence. The film Crossing over displays this factor in a scene where a South Korean teenager is joins a robbery gang with the aim of naturalization thus fitting into the American society. The American culture is known to be hostile to the immigrant communities. The film crossing over portrays this notion as it display scenes where immigrants are mistreated or even killed. Mireya Sanchez was murdered in the process of being deported back to her country. The real culture In my view, the American culture is wrongly interpreted by most of the films in the entertainment world. Many illegal practices have been linked to the modern American culture which is practically a stereotype of the original culture. According to my personal understanding, the real American culture is associated with solidarity and brotherhood. The cowboy and the Indian American cultures portray the real image of the American culture (Decherney, 198). The modeled modern culture that is displayed by various films in the entertainment industry describes the corruption of the real American culture by cultural boundaries and diversity brought about by the interaction between Native Americans and the immigrants. The rules created by the immigration department have made it hard for people to enter the boarders or acquire citizenship in the United States. This has led to the eruption of corruption cases and violence in relation to discriminatory rights. Cultural diversity has led to the decrease in racism recorded in the United state but has led to the increase in hostility of the immigrant communities. The real world shows actual dehumanizing immigration experiences as immigrant are denied work permits which leads them to devising other methods of survival. These include violence, immorality other illegal activities such as drug trafficking. All these are in the name of survival but do not portray the real American culture as displayed by various films in the Hollywood entertainment industry (Decherney, 86). Illegal immigration activities are influenced by the harsh immigration requirements but do not create the real image of the American culture. Conclusion We can conclude the discussion by the understanding that cultural diversity may result to various implications of the native original culture (Belsey, 17). Therefore, understanding the real culture of a certain society may be difficult as a result of various interpretations from emerging trends of technologies and the modern society. The crossing over affirms this notion as the American culture has created a different impression in the film.
