Social media can be defined as social instrument of communication that allows one to interact with it. It allows people to reach and connect through digital conversation. These digital conversations include blogging, podcasting and video blogging among others (Brogan, 2010, p. 1). This kind of approach differs with the old form of media. However, the greatest challenge arises when it comes to the integration of social networking sites and social media into business processes and operations (Verret, 2011). This section seeks to analyse the use of social media in business, and how it can be used to improve the potential profitability of a business. Hayes and Miller (2011, p.295) notes that 72 million users of the internet which is equivalent to 38% of the internet users use social media at least once in every month. In 2006 for instance the number of people visiting 10 social network sites grew from 46.8 million people to 68.8 million in a period of one year (Bausch & Han, nd,). A 2009 survey indicated 770 million people visited these sites (OECD, 2010, p.36). Social Networking Sites are web-based services which enable people to construct either public or semi-public profile within a system that is bounded in nature from where they are able to connect and share information. As such a social networking site could be described as a computer-mediated communication site or system (Boyd & Ellison, 2008, p.210). The major avenue in which a firm connects with its customers so as to ensure market leadership is through marketing. According to America Marketing Association (2007), marketing is the activity, set of institutions and process for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large. Marketing is a wide field with numerous activities. However, the important aspect of marketing that connects with social media platform is the advertising and public relations platform. Social media offers an avenue for business to advertise their products in an interactive manner in a multimedia format (Funk, 2011, p. 105 and 106). Apart from this, it can be used for public relations (Pilmar, 2005, p. 23). The whole essence of this is to create value and bond of attachment with customers (Cheng & Podolsky, 1996, p. 3). In conclusion, Social networking sites like social media are major tenets of the internet technology that have greatly influenced the business organizations ways of transacting business (O’Connor, 2000, p. 3). Individuals and business organization customers use the internet to gain information on various products, services and packages associated with the services they provide (Law & Hsu, 2006, p. 295). This has influenced business organizations to adopt the use of internet through social networking sites in order to continue increasing their customer numbers as well as business productivity. Section 3: Reflective Statement In going through this exercise, I have come to build some concepts that I feel are important and integral for ones professional development. I sincere personal reflection while undergoing through this encounter, I have learnt that for professional development one requires a holistic character. This can only be attained through gaining technical skills and soft skills. Technical skills are those that one gain through training and job experience while the soft skills can be referred as interpersonal skills that enable one to interact with others. One important bit of soft skills is on leadership and team building. The ability to be effective in any position is all about directing and influencing people to attain organizational goals. The two main aspects that i have learnt in this process are what it takes to be a manager and my interpersonal skills. Realization of interpersonal skills The critical thing that most employees and managers fail at is the lack of or inadequate self internal reflection. Internal reflection relates to our fears/weaknesses and our strengths. If a manager is able to critically analyze and understand the emotional side of the employees and be able to empathize with them, it would be easy to achieve organization’s goals, as integrating them in team building is easy. I nutshell I was able to learn that while technical skills are based on formal learning, an organization need a leader who is futuristic and this is only possible if you are able to learn employees emotion and use your interpersonal skills to develop rapport with them. I got to know a lot regarding my interpersonal skills from the teachings of the module, I learnt that I tend to lean towards the practical aspects of work than the theoretical as I find it easy to give concrete examples to my team in order to resolve a conflict or change a situation. I tend to seek the best solution for all in difficult situations as it is the achievement and end result that motivate me and I try to make everyone feel the same. This works for me all the time and make me gain greater influence and everyone sees how effective my ideas can be. To me, practically tackling the problem makes the tasks less difficult and the environment more appealing and conducive to getting good results. I learned that I am hands on person and get high percentage of things done when trying them out. I achieve the anticipated results even though I find it difficult in the start. I feel at home trying something new using my own initiative to achieve required results. I am good at resolving conflicts amongst the members of the team and therefore present solutions to the problems that arise from within the work group. I welcome constructive feedback and work upon the elements of improvement which are important. People trust me with their secrets as I consider empathy to be the integral ingredient of good relationships. Along with the identification of strengths, I was able to learn a number of my weaknesses. I am good at handling pressure when I work as a team lead or manager, yet it is often difficult for me to work in the supervision of others. Managing People and Organization A manager or a consultant ideally faces two forms of environment, the first is the internal and the second is the external one. According to organizational theories of the population ecology and the institutional theory, an organization has to adapt or be selective. It is in this organizational theory that a manager has to base his/her decisions and skills so as to direct the organization towards its goals and objectives. From the earlier sections, I have learnt the various categories of skills required by a manager so as to be competent. These skills ranges from technical ones learnt during formal training and those acquired socially. The most inspiring part was the revelation of the importance of people skills in managing organization and people. In relation to managing organization and job suitability criterion, I have seen how the two sets of skills are important. This has allowed me to appreciate that those who have higher emotional intelligence which translates to effective social skills are more prosperous and effective. Conclusion The above exercise has exposed me to what is expected of one in a job market. The first section of the assignment enabled me to build critical layers of advantage by being able to know numerous employability skills, writing a curriculum vitae and how to formulate a cover letter. These skills cuts across all discipline irrespective of ones intended major. The second section of skill test exposed me much to broader critical thinking. This rhymes with the current demand that individuals should be all rounded and holistically trained. In a nutshell this was dress rehearsal for the real happenings in the job market.
