Portfolio Assessment) (Name) (Institution) (Date) Section 1: Employability Skills Employability skills are an individual’s capability into gaining employment, obtaining new employment if need be and maintaining it. It is all about getting employed and doing the work as required, thus meeting the company’s objectives. Additionally, they are skills required to be self sufficient in the corporate world and realizing one’s potential through employment. It depends on one’s ability, skills and knowledge an individual possesses. One is supposed to use the skills as owns assets to present to the employers and apply them in the context of the work employed for. According to Bloch and Bates (1998), employability is a two sided, where individuals need appropriate and usable market information to help them make decisions about the corporate market. Fallow and Steven (2000) also claim that employability is not all about academic or vocational skills, there is more than this. Individuals need support to discover when their information would be useful, interpret it, thus turning it into relevant intelligence. They also need opportunities to make their own decisions, acquire training and employment. Demand and supply of labour therefore, need to be taken into account when it comes to employability, which often depends on unavoidable circumstances. However, individual employability depends on some issues like, Knowledge, attitudes and skills which in this sense are his or her assets, the way he deploys those assets, presenting them to their employees and the exact context within which they seek employment. Five different jobs I think I would be eligible to are, Human resource manager, Human Resource Director, Administrator, Secretary and a Public relations officer. Some of the employability skills I would need to apply in employment are: Application of Numeracy. This is my understanding of mathematical concepts and applying them based on proper reasoning. In additions, I will need to implement mathematical operations without any errors. Also I need to be aware of analyzing and conceptualizing numerical data. As a Human Resource manager, I need to apply the numeracy skill, with my understanding of the mathematical concepts. The Second eligibility is team working also known as interpersonal communication. This is where one shows respect for diverse opinions, contribution from others and belief systems. Additionally, one will also need to interact with other colleagues in a way that it will contribute to efficient working relationships, thus achieving company’s goals. Self management is managing one’s self in terms of communication, time, visual literacy, presenting, and writing, among others. One therefore, needs to manage his or time well. Meaning, not wasting company’s time and meeting the deadlines. Proper use of resources is also essential; it is a crime for an employee to waste or misuse company’s resources. Moreover, one should take responsibility for his or her own actions, consequences and decisions. Am eligible for the Human Resource Director position because; I hold Masters Degree in Public Relations as well as, Degree in Human Resource director. My interpersonal communication skills are excellent, therefore, I can be able to communicate effectively if am lucky to get a job as director in Human Resource (Ellis, 2009). Business and Customer Awareness is the most essential skill an employee would possess. This is because; companies are business oriented and value their customers than their employees. Therefore, knowing how to deal with a customer makes ones employability skills to be above average. For example, communicating concisely and clearly helps fulfill the purpose and meets the needs of a customer. It is also essential to respond respectively to a customer in a manner that it will improve effective communication. Information management or application of IT is also important. One needs to gather and manage information in an organization. Organizing, locating, selecting and having knowledge of a document using the appropriate and updated technology is one of the greatest assets an employee would acquire. This is because Information Technology or computer literacy helps a company to communicate effectively and with ease. For example, as an administrator, one would need information and literacy skills for effective management. Nevertheless, Problem solving skills helps an individual to deal with diverse people in an institution. In the work place people have different opinions that will differ from your. However, by being aware of how to deal with each and everyone will make it easy for someone to solve problems easily. Employees need to have a critical thinking mind where, he or she will be able to analyze, evaluate and synthesize. This will help him apply a systematic approach while solving problems. Good decision making skills also come in handy, while solving problems. This is because while solving a problem one needs to have a creative and innovative thinking to anticipate and solve problems. Lastly is the communication and literacy where an individual knows how to communicate clearly. For example, writing, reading, presenting, listening and speaking. Without these skills there could be no proper communication between an employer and employee as well as one’s colleagues. Therefore, employability skills are very significant in people who are looking for employment. More so, in all types of employment, individuals need to acquire the above named skills in order to add value to the company. Yours truly Section 3: Reflective Statement Employability skills are very important when it comes to finding employment. This assessment has helped open my eyes in the corporate world. Course work, lessons from the lecturers has helped me a great deal. To start with, the employability skills I have learnt will help me with my future work, in terms of finding employment. For example, I know that in order to be eligible for any job I must acquire, communication skills, problem solving skill, information technology knowledge among other essential skills. Secondly, it has a great impact in my studies. This is because; I will try improving on my assets in terms of employability skills and attitudes. Both my integrity and reliability have been developed by the assessment. Another asset that has been improved is my intermediate skills like occupational ones. This means that through the assessment, I have been able to learn more about problem and communication skills, in addition to personal attributes such as taking responsibilities for my own actions. In order to contribute to the organization effectively, I learnt that, my self management skills should be excellent. For example, time and resources are the most important assets in an organization and therefore, I should not waste any of them. Team work and having a business oriented mind is also a skill I learnt I should learn or rather improve on (Hind and Moss, 2007). However, I hope to achieve so much over the year. I need to transfer the skills learnt from the assessment practically. I want to achieve the best in life, in terms of getting my dream job, as well as, applying the employability skills learnt. Having learnt how to transfer these skills from one occupation to business context, I will try to increase employer’s attention by my skillfulness. I hope to get employment in an organization, where I will be able to apply my skills, in addition to exploiting them. In this way I will be marketing and selling them to my employers. In addition, to the above skills, I have learnt the skills required in managing skills or rather having the self awareness. There are many opportunities out there and need people like me to grab them. This assessment has therefore, taught me how to gain entry in the market by the employability skills I should possess. Life skills and decision making skills the portfolio have expounded will help me with in the future because it has helped me develop a strategy of where I want to be or become in the future. Moreover, my job searching skills have been enhanced. Through this course, I have acquired informal and formal networks to use during my job hunt. I have also adapted the labour developments in the market and realistic market opportunities. Another important aspect I now know is career management in securing an employment. This includes presentation of CV’s, references and testimonies, work experience and qualifications in terms of educational background. Besides, I have acquired the ability to actualize and realize the employability assets. This normally depends on one’s external and personal circumstances and the relationship between an employee and employer. I therefore, need to boost my employability aspects that will help enhance my employment opportunities in the light of an employer. Furthermore, I have developed vocational and knowledge skills in the labour market. The employability skills are the relative chances of maintaining and getting different kinds of employment. Individuals need to focus on knowledge, credentials, social status and their credentials in order to obtain employment. It always depends on whether a person is able to fulfill the job requirements or not. However, one need to look at the supply of demand and labour taking into account one’s credentials and knowledge guarantees him or her a better position in the corporate market.
