Today the world has been turned into a global village as people travel across the borders of different countries to transact businesses or for vacation purposes. Key to Enhancing this is the airway transport companies such as British Airways that carries passengers to different parts of the world.
Company Description
The British Airways is an airway transport company in the transport industry. It was established in 1972 by the United Kingdom government to manage two nationalized airline and two smaller regional airlines corporations. The two nationalized corporation included British European Airways and British overseas airways corporation (Bacon, 2012, p.22.) The regional corporations included the northeast airlines and Cambrian Airways from Cardiff. The four companies were later merged in 1974 to form the British Airways. The company was privatized by the United Kingdom government in 1987 as part of the wider privatization plan by the government.
The company, British Airways, is the flag carrier airline of the United Kingdom. It is the largest airline basing on the fleet size, international destinations, and international flight. When measured in terms of the passengers carried by the company, it is the second largest airline company after Easy Jet. The airline company is based in Waterside near its main hub at the London Heathrow Airport. It also has a major presence in Gatwick airport, a base in London city airport and Manchester airport. The company has various destinations in United Kingdom and Ireland, Europe, North America and Caribbean, South America, Far East and Australia, Middle East, Africa, south and central Asia. This provides the company with a good growing opportunity and ready market for the customers.
The British Airways vision is to become among the leading world’s most responsible airline. The principles of achieving this goal are centered in four key areas that include workplace, marketplace, environment and community investment activities. In the workplace, the company ensures the provision of sustainable employment for their current employees so as to become the choice employer for future employees. In the marketplace, the airline works with the suppliers and customers for the purpose of building a more sustainable business. In the environment, the airline makes sure that it minimizes their impacts on the environment concerning climate change, noise, air quality and waste. In the community, the company supports various projects that make the UK or overseas communities more sustainable (Gondwe, 2012, pp.214 – 247.)
The mission statement of the British airway is to be the undisputed leader in world travel in the next millennium. They plan to achieve this by offering services basing on core values of reliability, honesty, good service and on time which will enable them to compete favorably with other airlines like Easy Jet.
The company is headed by the chief executive officer. Below the chief executive officers are the customer and operational executives, the management board and various departments reporting to the chief executive officer. The organization culture is almost similar to that of the British community. The company is goal oriented, externally driven as it is more concerned with the welfare of the community and has a strict work discipline where employees are required to carry out their work in a professional way.
The company has a professional culture where employees identity is determined by his profession, for example, the company engineer. The organization is employee oriented as it is more concerned with the welfare of the employees in accordance with their principles. The employees of British airlines also closely identify themselves with the company. The company uses the authoritative and participative management style where employees are involved in decision-making.
