Internship Position in AlAli Engineering Company The job position for which I was entitled during the internship in AlAli Engineering Company was Financial and accounting analyst. The plan of the internship program was that the experienced people working in the company will teach me the basics of using the accounting systems known as Pioneer and Pioneer Plus which were used in the company for maintaining accounts. The main work involved in the internship was recording and entering the monthly wages of the employees of AlAli Engineering Company into the accounting systems used in the company. Also, the job involved getting training on the predation of budgets for investment purposes and entering cheques in the same accounting software system. The job position required a basic understanding of accounting and finance. The company expected accuracy, discipline, interest to learn and focus in my work. Training Completed Week 1 In the first week, the training program included learning about the basic function and accounting processes in the company. I learned the process of entering data in Microsoft excel, sorting of invoices according to amount and dates, receiving invoices from the customers and suppliers of the company and checking the proper recording of invoices and buying documents. I developed suitable skills of working with data on excel, communicating with the customers and suppliers, working in coordination with other team members and prioritizing my work and time. Sorting the invoices was the most significant task in my training in the first week. Also, entering and sorting data related to the customers and suppliers were other important tasks. Apart from these, communicating with the customers and sharing information with them was a key part of my training. Week 2 The second week of my training program involved the key tasks like checking and monitoring the monthly wages of the employees, entering these wages in the accounting system called Pioneer, preparing the monthly payroll for each of the employees, comparing and reviewing the invoices of the clients with the amounts entered in the system and reviewing and checking to identify any mistakes in the invoices. The tasks also involved the analysis of data in order to compare the invoice amounts with the records in the accounting systems, gathering proper information and checking errors in a stringent and detailed manner. Week 3 In the third week of my training, I learned to use another accounting program known as pioneer plus. I also learned to enter a wider number of daily activities of the company in this software. I was trained with respect to the collection of daily invoices from the clients and suppliers and then entering these invoices in the accounting system. The company also trained me on entering the different bonds in the system, exchanging cheques collected from clients and suppliers and checking the bonds and cheques on a daily basis. In addition to these tasks, I was also trained on how to enter the received payments from clients in the accounting system. The third week of the training helped me to develop many new skills related to my work. I became much proficient in using the accounting program, Pioneer Plus. I learned to handle detailed tasks and became fast in calculating various numerical data for the company. I also developed the skills of organizing data and gained the knowledge of new principles and concepts. Week 4 The fourth week of the training was the final week of my internship program. Thus, this was a very significant week in which all my learning’s in the three weeks were assessed and were implemented. In addition to this, new training was given to me to make me more knowledgeable and proficient in the tasks included in the internship program of the AlAli Engineering Company. I was given an extensive training on the preparation of the financial statements for investment of the company. The company trained me regarding the setting of budgets for financial evaluation as well as decision making purposes. The training also involved the learning process of the analysis of financial gains and losses which were the results of investments of the company. The preparation of financial statements for the company was also a part of the training in the fourth week of the internship program. The preparation of the financial statements was aimed at checking the unrealized incomes and losses for the particular future investments of the company. I developed a number of key skills from the project including delegation of responsibility, budget preparation, decision making for investment purposes and setting goals and objectives for projects. Intern’s Contribution to Organization In my opinion and as per the feedback from the trainers in the company, it can be established that my work during the internship program has added value to the organization. I made significant contributions in the company. I contributed by helping the accounting department in the daily record maintenance process, entering data in the software system and keeping an accurate record of the payments and invoices. I helped the business to set budgets, prepare investment goals, analyzing the financial gains and losses that may be realized from the investments, making suitable plans for future investments and checking and monitoring the unrealized incomes and losses from the key investments of the company. Academic Training and Organization’s Expectation Comparison I had learnt about the basic accounting concepts during my academic course in Qatar University. I had a fair idea of the accounting principles, the way of entering accounting data in software systems and about financial statements. The knowledge of accounting systems helped me adequately during the 1 month internship program in the AlAli Engineering Company. The prior knowledge in accounting helped me to grasp the working of the two accounting software systems in the company which are Pioneer and Pioneer plus. I had learnt to prepare and analyze financial systems of different companies during my academic course. This helped me to prepare the financial statements of AlAli Engineering Company with much ease. Usefulness and Merit of the Internship Training The internship program was of immense help to me and is a milestone in my career path. I have developed many accounting skills which would definitely help me in pursuing my career goal in the line of finance and accounts. The internship program gave me a first-hand experience of working in the corporate world. Apart from learning about the domain concepts and practices, I have also learnt many new things about working in the industry. Assessment of the Organization’s Work Environment The work environment in AlAli Engineering Company has both merits and demerits. The merits of the work environment include the facts that team work is much prorogated in the company, time management is strong and working under pressure is common. The people in the workplace have a helpful and cooperative attitude towards each other. The demerits include the presence of less female employees in the company which has resulted in the absence of any private section for the existing female employees. The system of working in weekends is another demerit of the company. Suggestion for Program Improvement The internship program may be improved by introducing an aligned training program that takes into consideration both the prior learning of the student in the university and the requirement of the internship providing organization. Also, introducing a system of maintaining an external guide from the company and an internal guide from the university can enhance the value of the internship program (Laird, Holton and Naquin, 2003). Conclusions It can be concluded that the internship program in AlAli Engineering Company has added to my knowledge base. It has enabled me to learn new things and developed new skills not only in the domain of finance and accounting but also in other practical domains of work. These skills include time management, concentration development, paying attention to detail, submitting my work on time, checking and reviewing my work to ensure that the work is accurate and error free.
