FOOD CHALLENGES IN THE UK Introduction There are many challenges facing Eastern foods in connection to HRM, accounting andoperation management. This is because many people given these responsibilities do not have best interest of people at heart, but their intention is to make profit. Many citizens are suffering, and it is becoming a problem to put a meal on the table due to the high cost of living. People in the UK are from different parts of the world and have different beliefs and cultures. For instance, Islam religion prohibits their followers to take pork because they believe it is cursed. In addition, most restaurants in the UK prepare spicy foods that make elderly people uncomfortable. There is also the problem of food insecurity since most of the eastern countries depend on food from other countries, thus, importing this food is becoming very expensive. People entrusted to manage and distribute food are doing it unfairly; hence, there is inequality in distributing food. This will result to shortage of food and rise of food products in coming months. HRM Those who are in HRM department do not have proper skills for running this department (Scot-Thomas, 2013, p. 3). There is waste of food because it is not distributed equally in all regions. Some parts are getting more food than other parts; thus, a lot of food is going to waste. There is also unnecessary import of food that can be produced locally. Fruits that are viable in the UK are imported from other continent, which is very expensive. HRM should take a step and educate local farmers on ways of growing different type of foods in the country as it will ensure food security (Scot-Thomas, 2013, p. 3). This can be achieved by educating people through local channels and writing agricultural articles in the local newspapers and magazines. In few months to come UK is likely to suffer from food insecurity because the country is concentrating on industries, thus, ignoring the agricultural sector (Scot-Thomas, 2013, p. 3). HRM department needs to starts long lasting agricultural projects in rural areas that will attract many farmers. This will encourage many farmers to expand on farming ensuring there is food security in UK. It is also important for HRM department to build many green houses that will protect many plants due to changing patterns of weather (Curtis, 2010, p. 12). Changing patterns of weather have resulted to decrease in food production. Citizens should also be encouraged to plant kitchen products at their kitchen garden instead of planting flowers only. This will increase the amount of food products; thus, ensuring there is food security in the country. It is the responsibility of HRM department to distribute seeds, pesticides and herbicides to farmers at lowers cost (Curtis, 2010, p. 12). This will encourage many citizens in the UK do not cultivate any food at their kitchen gardens instead they opt to plant flowers. This is dangerous since they have to go to the supermarket to buy tomatoes and onions, which they can plant in their kitchen gardens (Curtis, 2010, p. 35). HRM department provides seedlings, herbicides and pesticides to farmers at a high cost and this discourages them very much. This will result in lowering food production in the country; thus, food insecurity. Changing weather patterns have reduced food production in UK since there is prolonged period of winter. This is because most of the agricultural products are not viable during this period (Curtis, 2010, p. 35). Accounting Accounting department is using a lot of money in importing agricultural products in the UK. This is because agricultural department has been ignored, and the country is relying on other industries. High cost of importing food from other continents makes it difficult for the country to import food that is enough for everyone. Therefore, food products are taxed heavily making it difficult for common citizens to afford food. Accounting department importing food from outside countries only wants to make profit instead of ensuring that food is sold at a fair prize so that all people can have a decent meal. The department is also buying food from farmers at low prizes and selling these products to ordinary citizens at high prizes. Most people are unable to buy these products and they end up expiring in the stalls, therefore, becoming waste (Sun, 2012, p, 25). There is also the issue of exporting excess food to other products living the citizens with little. Officials in this department are there to make profit until they forget about the ordinary citizens. There is the challenge of importing excess food in the country that is not needed. These food ends up becoming waste and that money could have been used to seedling or pay farmers at better price. Many farmers are discouraged to concentrate on large scale farming because their products are bought at low prices (Sun, 2012, p. 25). This will reduce food production in UK resulting to food insecurity. Marketing and operation management This department does not fully concentrate on marketing agricultural products since they concentrate on electrical products to make profit. This results to agricultural products in UK that could have been exported to other products to become wastes. Marketing department should give agricultural industry equal weight like the other industries. It is their responsibility to market agricultural products on behalf of the farmers so that they can be bought at fair prices. This will encourage farmers to venture into large scale farming since their products are bought at fair prices. The department should ensure that the amount of agricultural products imported is minimal compared to the amount imported (Sun, 2012, p. 40). This will ensure that food is produced locally; thus, lowering food prices in the country. Key issues Culture There are people from different cultures who live in the UK. Others have come from different parts of the continent making them to be sensitive on the type of food they are eating. For instance, it is forbidden to eat some foods (Sun, 2012, p. 40). Islam religion does not allow their followers to eat pork meat because they believe it is cursed. Therefore, those selling pork meats will not do well in some areas in UK. UK is also known for people selling spicy food. Some people do not like spicy food because if affects their digestive system. Therefore, restaurants should cater for all kind of people. They should ensure that every person gets what they want and it to be their satisfaction. The government should not prohibit any type of food that a certain culture is interested with. Instead, they should support and encourage that culture if that food is healthy. Health Most foods that are eaten in the UK are GMO and junk foods. Many people suggest that these foods are not healthy, and most of them cause obesity and cancer. There are many people who suffer from heart problems because they have a lot of fats. Youth are not able to do heavy work because these foods do not give them the correct amount of energy but they only make them become fat. It is suggested that others interfere with the digestive system and that they may causes cancer. Spicy foods are not that good for elderly people because they make them feel like vomiting (Saris, 2010, p. 25). Therefore, the government should educate people on the best ways having a balanced a diet to avoid terminal diseases. People should also be encouraged to visit doctors at least once per month for checkup and to be advised on the correct way of living a healthy life. Food insecurity In few months, the issue of food insecurity will be a major issues since those having this responsibility are not taking it with the seriously it with the seriousness it deserve. Most of the food that is being imported is perishable food that cannot last for long. This might result in food insecurity, especially during winter an drought periods when food production is low. People in UK do not have the appropriate skills and technology for preserving food. Therefore, there is a lot of food that is going to waste that can be preserved during difficult periods (Saris, 2010, p. 25). The country does not invest in large scale farming instead they depend on horticultural food that is imported from other countries. This makes horticultural products to be very expensive thus making common citizens to cough a lot of money. The government needs to provide seedlings and pesticides to farmers at lowers prices. Farmers should also be provided with fertilizers and farming equipment at low prices. This will encourage them to invest heavily in horticultural products, thus, eradicating the problem of food insecurity (Saris, 2010, p. 45). The government also needs to educate farmer’s better and current methods of farming. This makes farming easier and enjoyable hence increasing food productivity. Ordinary citizens should be educated on the importance of having a kitchen garden. This will encourage them to plant tomatoes and onions instead of relying on the government to import these products. It is also a good strategy for increasing productivity and curbing food insecurity. Recommendation Since UK is a country with people from different parts of the world and culture. It is vital for the government to educate its citizens on the importance of respecting and embrace every person’s culture (Saris, 2010, p. 45). Nobody should be allowed to criticize another person because of the food they are eating and their beliefs. The government should not restrict any person who wants to import food according to its culture not unless it’s harmful to other people. People should also be educated on the correct ways of feeding to avoid obesity. People who like junk food should be encouraged to visit the gym to get rid of excess calories. GMO foods that might result to cancer should be discouraged by the government and recommend natural foods. It is also important for ordinary people to be encouraged to grow horticultural products at their kitchen gardens to curb the problem of food insecurity. Data collection Data was collected through interviewing different people and using both primary and secondary sources. I also read books and got information from the internet, which was very helpful. Although there were some challenges faced since some people were not willing to be interviewed and others gave incorrect information, I tried my best to get the correct information. Travelling was also a challenge because of weather as some parts were raining heavily, but I was able to manage. Language barrier was the most challenging issue because some people did not understand English. Methodology The methods of the research used were quantitative and qualitative analysis and it was able to cover all sections. Both primary and secondary sources were used to get information. Teacher’s notes were used to clarify parts that were not understood. Irrelevant information was edited by help from my colleagues. Conclusion There are many challenges of eastern foods in the UK because of various reasons. First, UK accommodates people from different parts of the world. These people have different cultures and beliefs that prohibit them to eat certain foods. Secondly, UK is known to produce spicy foods and these kinds of foods affect the elderly. Spicy foods also do no last for long thus most of the foods go to waste. Most of the foods produced in the UK are GMO which have serious side effects. These foods can cause chronic diseases like cancer and diseases like obesity. It is therefore important for the government to educate people on the importance of having a balanced diet. There is also the challenge of food insecurity because UK depends on horticultural food from other countries. The government should encourage farmers to invest on large scale farming so that produce a lot of horticultural foods. This can be achieved by giving farmers seeds at a low price and buying their products at high prices to encourage them.
