Controversial Globalization Topic It is no doubt that globalization is one of the greatestphenomena to ever occur in human history. It has changed the way people live and conduct business across the world in a great way. While there is a consensus that globalization has had significant impact in the world, there is great debate on whether the impact has been positive or negative (Bussolo 14). As a result, various controversial globalization topics have emerged such as on its impact on human rights, loss of national sovereignty, poverty, pollution, and environment among others.

This paper will focus on the controversial globalization topic of poverty. It will report on how two opposing organization have opposing views on the topic. These organizations are Share The World Resources Organization and The Urban Institute. Body Share The World Resources Organization is of the view that globalization promotes poverty, while The Urban Institute is of the view that globalization has been instrumental in reducing poverty around the world (Ghimire). In supporting its position, Share The World Resources Organization argues that while globalization has helped to raise the living standard of people around the world, it has however driven many people into deeper poverty.

Its position is informed by the view that third world countries and small businesses do not have the capacity of acquiring or updating their technology as quickly and often as their wealthier and larger counterparts. As a result, Share The World Resources argues, they are unable to compete effectively with wealthy nations and multinational firms, and therefore forced to do business locally and in small-scale (Ghimire). Due to this reality, small businesses and developing countries fail to realize the full benefits of globalization, a situation that breeds poverty.

However, The Urban Institute holds a different view that globalization reduces poverty. It argues that in the wake of globalization the world has witnessed dramatic decline in absolute poverty (Lerman). It attributes this decline to the remarkable growth in investment, trade, and increase in immigration, all of which are a product of globalization. The institute further argues that globalization has created more opportunities, which when fully exploited can dramatically reduce poverty. It gives examples of opportunities created in business and technologies that make life easier and cheaper.

Also, it gives example of how globalization has created employment opportunities locally as well as internationally (Lerman). Conclusion I agree with The Urban Institute side of the debate that globalization is instrumental in reducing poverty. My view is informed by the consideration of how globalization has dramatically reduced absolute poverty especially in developing countries. As a result of my research on the topic of poverty my view on the topic has changed. I have come to realize that poverty is a serious problem that cannot be solved quickly; it needs actions and policies that can gradually reduce and eventually eliminate it.

The topic of poverty in the globalization context affects the following industries the most: telecommunications, banking, transportation, and small-scale businesses. This is because any globalization process has direct effect on these industries (Bussolo 97). Works Cited Bussolo, Mauriz. Globalization and Poverty: Channels and Policy Responses. Routledge, 2005.
