Rhetorical Analysis Macroeconomic Policy and Diversity Conservation I. Summary of the Article for Rhetorical Analysis The article d “Macroeconomic Policy and Biodiversity Conservation” was chosen to be the subject of rhetorical analysis because of the seeming contradictoy stance it took to use government’s macroeconomic policy for diversity conservation. As we know, business and diversity conservation seemed to juxtaposed against each other and the scholarly article attempted to reconcile it.

The article shall be analyze for its pathos or emotional appeal, ethos or integrity and logos or logic on how effective it persuade its readers for the controversial point of view it stood for (University Writing Center). The article pointed out that economic expansion is the biggest threat to biodiversity conservation. The article elaborated on how economic expansion tends to consume resources beyond the regenarative capacity of our natural capital to the detriment of our ecosphere and subsequent loss of biodiversity.

That if the market would be left unfettered to take its natural course, it will create growth that is unsustainable and will endanger the availability of natural resources in the future. The article also pointed out the limitations of the government’s macroeconomic instruments (i.e. fiscal, monetary and international trade policy) to limit the scale of economic activity within the regenerative and waste assimilative capacities of the ecosphere. The usage of government’s rate of spending through its fiscal policy and its instrument to control money supply through its monetary policy does not provide a viable solution for the dilemma of ecological sustainability.

So much so with international trade policy which only enhances the competitiveness of its domestic industries abroad which is not always desirable for the environment. II. Rhetorical Analysis In promulgating ideas, writers and authors use various types of rhetorics to persuade or convince their readers to agree or favor the point of view they are trying to espouse. The approach may differ depending on the circumstances and the audience type. They may use pathos or appealing to the emotions of the audience.

Pathos may work well in convincing people about certain political issues such as Martin Luther King’s speech which relied heavily on pathos to rally people in ending the racial discrimination against the negro in America. The author can also use ethos or credibility/integrity especially when the author is a subject matter expert whose academic preparation and experience made him or her well verse about the issue that he or she is talking about (Roberts-Miller). Logos on the other and is persuading readers or audience through the use of reason and logic (University Writing Center).

This article can be considered to use more of the logos type of persuasion for it tries to convince the reader on the benefit of regulating the pollutant of industries and to illustrate that it s possible to do it in an effective manner. a. Pathos The article may not be emotional in its tone due to the nature of the literature which is academic writing that follows the formal rules of writing, but the topic nevertheless touched on our concern about the environment. It appeals to our sense of responsibility that we have to do something to save our environment from degradation and to do that we should regulate the pollutants emitted by industry.

The topic has emotional significance to the readers because the reader is aware how ruined our ecosphere is and how it contribute to global warming. b. Ethos Considering the source of the journal which is EbscoHost, the article has the assurance of the integrity of its argument to be grounded on sound scientific study having been scrutinized by stringent academic standard. This was evident with how the author argued on how to regulate industry by using the government’s macroeconomic tools to regulate the emission of industrial pollutants from an economist point of view.

The author wrote with authority to convey that she is an authority about the subject. a. Logos Being an academic journal, the article posed its appeal to the readers using logic or logos. It argued how industrial pollution can be contained through cap and trade system and using the monetary and fiscal policy of the government to discourage pollution. It reasoned that by taxing heavily industries which pollute, it could encourage business to be ecologically responsible. The variations of the government’s macroeconomic policy which are the fiscal and monetary tools were argued from the point of reason how the author’s proposal is feasible in controlling industrial pollution.
