 Comparison of Air Cargo Facilities FedEx Corporation refers to a logistics service organization. FedEx is based in the United States, and its headquarters are situated in Memphis, Tennessee. The word FedEx is a syllabic ellipsis of the name of the organization’s initial air division, Federal Express (Neufville & Odoni, 2003). United Parcel Service Company is also a package delivery organization. The firm is recognized by its abbreviation UPS. UPS headquarters are located in Sandy Spring, the state of Georgia.

The firm is recognized for its brown trucks, known as package cars. UPS also has its own airline located in Louisville, Kentucky (Neufville & Odoni, 2003). This paper will assess the similarities and differences of FedEx and United Parcel Service (UPS) air cargo facilities in Memphis, TN and Louisville, KY respectively. Similarities between the Two Air Cargo Facilities The world’s two leading integrated shippers, FedEx and UPS, run their central air hubs extremely similar to one another.

The recent cargo industry comprises of three market parts, express packages, heavyweight freight shipments and mail transport. Integrated cargo companies such as UPS and FedEx caters for all three classes. The second similarity is that packages that go by air are put into cargo containers that weigh more than one ton. UPS and FedEx workers can move these containers with nominal energy because the facilities are lined with ball bearing on the floors. The containers permit workers to work slightly with package arrangement and then move parcels in bulk into the aircraft.

The parcels then are taken to Memphis or Louisville for further organization. Floors are fitted with ball bearings to alleviate the transportation of cargo containers (Neufville & Odoni, 2003). The FedEx or UPS drivers uses route-organizing software that allows them to save fuel and time to execute the most accurate delivery route. A remote delivery gadget is used to inspect a package and obtain a signature upon delivery. The whole delivery process takes less than a day. Differences between the Two Air Cargo Facilities The main differences between FedEx and UPS link to their application of technology and their relationships with their core airports.

Both organizations have been developing Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) in partnership with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). However, only UPS has this system established on all of its airplanes and can thus ease separation times for dockings. In addition, UPS seems to have a greater relationship with Louisville because of its dominant role at the airport. UPS is the leading airline at Louisville with 47% of operations with the following largest operating only 15%.

In Memphis, Norwest Courier operates double the number of flights in relation to FedEx. Louisville has two runways that are parallel and independent (Neufville & Odoni, 2003). They run north to south and are specialized for synchronized operations. The third runway is only used in reduced capacity circumstances. Louisville also contains 62,000 linear feet of high-speed taxiways. Memphis airport is endowed with four runways. It has one perpendicular runway to the north, next to the FedEx terminal and three parallel runways that lack a displaced threshold and that are situated close to the passenger terminals (Neufville & Odoni, 2003).

In conclusion, FedEx and UPS must adapt their services to fit the market needs over time. The two haulers should position themselves to contend against the innumerable number of low-cost licensed haulers rising in the region. It appears that, in the coming years, FedEx and UPS will encounter more competition overseas than from the American states. Reference Neufville, R. & Odoni, R. (2003).
