Negotiation Whether engaging in a shopping spree, in a tram station , buying new sofa for the sitting room or planning to buy a wedding or a birthday cake for loved ones, there one aspect that accompanies all these excursions; cost. Where cost is involved a settlement is needed for the transactions to be made, this settlement is achieved through negotiation. Negotiation, which can be described as a dialogue between two people or entities is a discussion geared to reaching a compromise ground where both parties would be contented with the outcomes of the events at hand. The increased globalization has enhanced connectivity of world destinations and actualized the modernization yearned for a century ago. Many are time that businesses, governments, nonprofit organizations, and interpersonal communications are coupled with negotiations of diverse origins. Negotiations can be seen to be part of the every day’s life of human kind. In this motion, picture Richard Gere and Julia Roberts engage in a negotiation involving money, (Mateer). The negotiation begins when Richard comes into the bathroom announced and tells Julia that he has a business proposal for her. The proposal is about her spending a week with him in the town. One fact though should be remembered that Julia is a call girl, and would not be in business if she were to spend a whole week with Richard Gere. During the negotiation for the price for this period, Julia quotes 4000 dollars as the price since she values both days and nights meaning six nights and six days. They settle at 3000 dollars as a compromise. Eventually when Richard is leaving for wok Julia confesses that she would have gladly accepted to be beside him for the whole had he offered to pay 2000 dollars instead of the 3000 dollars they settled for as a compromise. On his side, Richard confessed that he would have paid 4000 dollars had Julia refused to accept the compromise of the 3000 dollars. This negotiation episode in this motion picture has set the precedence for this discussion on negotiations. This negotiation has been presented to reflect the consumer and producer gains surplus from trade. Apart from trade, it can be seen whenever the value of the negotiation is seen to favor the interests of each of them is supposed to accept depending on the importance of ht accept being negotiated. Whenever involved parties feel that the negotiated price or compromise is within their predetermined limits, then an agreement is reached very easily. In the business world, negotiations do not always move toward an agreement. In this motion picture, it can be deduce that in negations when people know what they want it is a costly affair. This is a good example to entrepreneurs and business executives want to make the best out of their transactions. In this case, Julia Roberts know her value; she is not ready to give in that easily. Although she knows that a price of 2000 dollars would be enough for her, she engages in a vibrant negotiation to squeeze more money from Richard Gere. On his part Richard Gere know what he wants and has its value in mind. He knows he can part with 4000 dollar for Julia to be with him throughout the week, but he wants to gain more value for this by going even lower. One lesson learnt from this is that, there is need of being flexible, setting limits, and an accommodating attitude when it comes to negotiations. The knowledge of the prevailing market conditions, the worth of the people dealing with, and one’s own worth is a nice precedence to strengthening ones position in bargaining. Based on cramp, there is a need to eliminate emotions in negotiation process. One should focus on what they can control to gain the wanted results ii. One should take no for the answer in case they are interested in gaining an advantage in negotiations. They propose a rather simple negotiation process where parties do not need to play hardballs or give in when negotiations are difficult. Based on their argument, a negotiation’s goals should be and is not necessarily directed at winning the arguments, but towards a generation of a conducive compromise that would be favorable for both parties. These can be supported by the emotion picture negotiation between Julia and Richard Gere. They engage in a negotiation process lasting only two minutes to conclude. This is a faster way of making negotiations when parties know the stakes and are willing to take stands based on fact and create room for flexibility. An apt negotiation would consider the most important aspects of the involved parties instead of the position they firmly stand by. In case where mediators are involved, this third party needs to take a stand or suggest possible compromises to the involved parties without necessarily being involved, (Camp). The involved parties should be able to make their choices. A mediator should be neutral and geared towards finding a solution to the problem. People involved should be separated from the problem itself. The negotiation process is a diverse process involving many intermitted steps, which are all geared towards achieving the end goal of achieving an agreement, (Fisher & Ury). Whether one uses all the uses steps sequentially or manages to bypass some of them will be judged by the end success. Many approaches to the process of negotiation have been put forward; the most basic negation process would involve the following steps; Preparation, opening of the discussions, arguments, exploring the possibilities, and signaling readiness to work. Additionally, this process would involve deciding the possible packages for trading, closing the negotiation and sustaining the negotiated agreements. Emotions in a negotiation process can be very harmful. Emotions, which can be described as patterned aggregation of neural and chemical responses emanating in the confines of the brain in response to existence of competent emotional stimuli, are a great determinant of the outcomes of any negotiation process. They take various forms namely, embarrassment, happiness, joy, hatred, fear, acceptance, sadness, surprise, anticipation and anger. All these are apt of human kind and negotiators are bound to experience them at some point in the negotiations. In the real world, emotions are a part of the society and play an important role in communication whether at home or at work place. They are more of what people feel and what they think. Many aspects of emotions enhance or derail effective communication, thus they can motivate the speaker to continue communication or abandon the whole process. In context of negotiations, emotions derail the negotiations from the ultimate goal of reaching a compromise. In conclusion, this paper was focusing on negotiation as presented in the motion picture, Pretty Woman. This motion picture is directed by Garry marshal presents an aspect of negotiation that can be explored to deduce how well negotiation can be utilized for betterment of the goals and aspirations of the parties involved. Emotional awareness is very crucial in interpersonal communication. Emotional awareness is a necessary tool in any medium of communication. Negotiation requires emotional awareness since emotions are seen to greatly influence the outcomes of any negotiation process. The sole purpose of negotiation can be se to be creating a shared environment. Whenever involved parties feel that the negotiated price or compromise is within their predetermined limits, then an agreement is reached very easily. In the business world, negotiations do not always move toward an agreement. Many a times a third party usually known as mediators come to arbitrate for a compromise. This is usually attributed to break down of communication channels, but in most cases it is seen be common where the stakes in the negotiation are too high. Many are the times that negation are geared towards resolving a conflict involving important matters that have to be resolved for the welfare of all the parties involved. There are personalities derived from the styles of negotiation, these competing, accommodating, avoiding, collaborating, and compromising personalities. Out of all these personalities, the collaborative approach is seen to be the best option. This is because it ensures that the parties find a common ground that is acceptable to the parties. To get the best bargain out of the negotiations according to Camp “no” should always be the answer. It should remain to be a no until the things sound better for the involved parties. Julia knew this, she responded by no and was quick to say yes when time was ripe.
