However, when the software system becomes more complex, the objectives are multiplied and start to depend on different configurations and circumstances, it becomes imperative to structure the development effort to avoid software development that does not answer the clients need, or does not have the requisite level of quality, or becomes impossible to forecast in terms of time and budget – or a combination of any of the preceding.

In situations of complexity in software development, structure methods seek to improve project management and communication, to stay on target with what the client requires, to improve the quality of software systems that are built and to reduce the costs during the life cycle of the development. The techniques used to accomplish these objectives are based on identifying the real-life processes to be handled by the software and the flow of data in and out of these processes. Both requirements and design of the system are specified and the whole development project then structured into separate modules. A key part of the structured methods is the dialogue between users (clients) and developers in order to ensure that the software produced corresponds to what the customer wanted.

Structured Methods for software development is a trend that began over thirty years ago. The guiding principles of a methodology for simplifying and clarifying systems design in a way that is understandable to both clients and developers were put forward in one of the earliest papers, "Structured Design" by Stevens, Myers, and Constantine (Stevens, 1974). Their work was seminal and lies at the root of many further papers and books in the field. In particular, Constantine went on to collaborate with Yourdon (Constantine, 1975) with a book also titled "Structured Design" and both have published further works in the same domain.  ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
