Training methods vary in many organizations and are dependent on the industry within which the employees are working in. Training may also vary in terms of the approaches that are used in imparting knowledge and skills to the employees. People may decide to train themselves on the job as is the case in smaller organizations or organizations may have specialized training programs designed for their employees both on and off the job and this is so for large organizations (Danziger & Dunkle, 2004).

There are various training methods available for employees in the banking industry and especially the tellers. A variety of HR experts have suggested the following skills as fundamental for any teller. (1) Excellent communication skills (2) computer skills (3) accounting skills (4) customer care skills including planning and organizing and lastly problem solving skills (Price, 2000). After understanding these training needs then it is important to look for the methods that are appropriate in training the employees to ensure they acquire these skills (Danziger & Dunkle, 2004). . e bank will need a trained professional to help them get the entire operating mechanism thereby necessitating classroom or instructor led methods (Switzer, Thomas, & Featheringham, 2006).

In the instructor led method the instructor will have the training manuals and any other materials that may be relevant for the particular training. He/she will lead the tellers through the different stages that for example are required when a customer is making a deposit or a withdrawal. This may be shown to the tellers through projecting information from a computer. The teller is shown all the steps required to perform a certain function. This is done for the entire package. The second method is online training where employees or in this case the bank tellers who are already at their working desks are sent information over a computer network most probably the company’s local area network.

The instructions for completing a certain process are given to them in form of e-manuals. The instructions are made simple such that they can easily be followed (Price, 2000). Another aspect of the online training is that employees or the bank tellers may alternatively be told to go to the bank’s website and read information about policies that govern customer care. In this way the tellers gain knowledge of what is expected of them. This method would also be very appropriate for BB&T because of the many tellers that it has and personalizing the training using instructors may be costly.

Another method that goes hand in hand with the above mentioned method is programmed learning where the tellers will be assisted by the computers and interactive video in learning. The instructor may provide copies of the lesson learnt for the tellers to go through at their own free time. They could be provided
