The first guiding principle of the book highlights that the solutions developed for physical problems should be customized for the place where it will be employed. The development of customized solutions for ecological problems should be informed by the understanding of the uniqueness of the environment, and drawing inspiration from local distinctions. The authors insist that the development of ecological solutions should take into account, the risks and the benefits of a design. From an accounting point of view, taking this outlook enables the developers to take the most beneficial option.

The third guiding principle directs that nature should be used as an inspiration for design development. Some of the natural strategies that can be employed include the breakdown of materials for better productivity or utilization. The fourth guiding principle is that all members of society can be engaged in the development of ecological designs (Van Der Ryn and Cohen 32). The authors emphasize the fact that necessity will often be at the core of idea development; emphasis is that inspiration can be sourced from different sources.

In order to improve the outcomes of designs, the authors highlight the importance of making nature visible, during and after the development of designs. The authors highlight that it is necessary to explore the ways that the society can maintain its exploitation of the resources available to it, while at the same time developing the ways needed to reduce the environmental impacts of designs. Some of the strategies and the models that can be used to address the urban problems found in modern societies and the climatic problems that are common social phenomena include storm water management.
