The soil used for the cultivation of beans need to meet specific requirements. At the first level, it should be warm as already stated above. Regarding specifically, the soil of Western Australia it could be stated that most of the regions of the country are suitable for the cultivation of beans. Using as an example the faba bean a report published in the governmental site of agriculture in Western Australia notices that specifically for faba beans, heavy soil is considered to be the most appropriate.

On the other hand, because the particular type of bean needs an increased irrigation, it is preferable that the plant is cultivated in areas with high levels of rainfall.  Another necessary requirement for the soil of the areas chosen for the cultivation of beans is the phosphate which can be added by the farmers in the appropriate quantity in accordance with the plant’s needs and the climate conditions of the particular region. From all types of beans, faba beans seem to be more responsive to phosphate than in other fertilizers.

However, as already noticed above the use of phosphate should be made very carefully using before – if possible – a soil test in order to evaluate the amount of phosphate required. Generally, it has estimated that “about 100kg of single super phosphate is required to replace the phosphorus removed in two tonnes of faba bean grain” . If the above guidelines – which are given through the governmental site of agriculture in Western Australia – are followed it is very likely that the cultivation of beans will be completed successfully taking into account that a close monitoring is necessary throughout the cultivation period.

Regarding the type of soil appropriate for the cultivation of beans, it has been supported by Hill (1952, 338) that “although beans will grow on a great variety of soils, a fertile soil, rich in lime, is necessary for a good yield while a warmer climate than for peas is desirable, and crop rotation should be practiced”.
