Topic:  Relationships Emoional Hardship of Tita and Celie Tita is a female who is very emotional, sensitive, and lovable, who yearned for her lover all her life. She was in love with her neighbor, Pedro in her younger age and longed to be with him all her life. Pedro asked Tita’s hand in marriage but was denied by her mother and instead her mother demanded Tita’s support till her death. Eventually Pedro married Tita’s elder sister which came as a major shock for Tita. She hence was encountered with deep pain and agony .She becomes a victim of negligence and torture from her mother, who hardly understood her desires and feeling as a young lady.Tita’s from then on released all her emotion with cooking which was her greatest passion. Whole of her life she had to burn in the desire to unite with her lover and also had to see her lover with someone else .This pain was killing her inside, but she found no way to express her despair and distress to anyone and kept everything to herself. Celie on other hand is a black woman, who had to undergo sexual assault from the hands of her step father and feel dejected and exploited at her own home. Moreover, she had lost her children from her step- father and had to undergo the agony of a mother who lost her children .She was then married to a man called Albert who also disrespectful towards her and abused her greatly which left a black mark on her mental and physical health. She felt being victimized by men in all phases of her young life and wanted to escape from this traumatizing environment. How are Tita and Celie are different? Tita is naïve and loving Mexican girl who is submissive and head over heels in love with her neighbor. All she wanted in her life was the love of her lover but was finding her mother as an obstacle to possess him. Tita is a delicate woman and had no expression of feminine strength and endurance to suffer all the pain and agony she was going through because of her lost love. She has her charms but she is not able to do anything because of the restriction she faced from her mother. She has been asked to serve her mother till death and forbidden from marrying her lover. She is very romantic and creative but loses her identity because of her arrogant and self – centered mother. Tita achieves the union with her lover very late in her life and also loses him the very day they became physically close. Celie is a black woman who has not seen the happier side of life, since her childhood. She actually does not have any self confidence or self – identity. She was subject to oppression from men since her childhood and also had to bear children from sexual assault. She lost trust in herself and had no hope in life and the only relief she had the love she had for God. She also got married to a man she never loved and had to be a victim of abuse and assault from him too. Through all these bad experience she lost her self confidence and her sexuality and felt that she had no dreams and hopes from life. But later with the help of her friend, she realizes that she had lot more strength and will power left in her to bring back positive changes in her life. She molds herself to be independent business women and regain the power as well established black women that most of women desired for. Elements Tita and Celie needed to be Stronger Tita is a young woman who has no moral or emotional support from anyone in her family or outside. She should have fought with her mother to acquire her lover as her mother was being cruel and ignorant to her. She should have developed some courage to speak for herself and obtain what she wanted most in her life. Being naïve and innocent is not a bad quality but being suppressed and exploited is also not a quality worth praising. A woman should be strong and determined enough to explore her desires and choices in life and standby it at any cost. Tita’s mother was threatening her and black mailing and if she would have been strong willed she could have achieved her lover whom she loved passionately and unconditionally. If Tita’ had been more expressive about her emotion, love, and desire she could have won her lover and also would not had to waste her whole life desperately yearning for him. Celie on other hand, is raped at early years of her young age and gave also gave birth to two children. She here should have been bold enough to confront her step – father who was abusive and molester. She should have resisted him and tried to get away from him in some way, before he could ruin the early years of her adulthood. She was being oppressive to herself by taking in all insults and abusing from her unfaithful and disrespectful husband. She should have realized that as a wife she has certain rights in the family and should fight to get respect and faithfulness from her husband. Celie was also negligent about her sexuality and physical outlook and did nothing to enhance it by any means. Only when she identifies the outward and strong nature of other woman, then she realized that she can be as determined and independent like them and achieve something productive in her life. Tita and Celie being Creative Tita is a soft hearted young woman who was in despair because she could not possess her lover and marry him. Tita being born in kitchen and taken care of by a cook had great connection and passion for cooking. When she was kept away from her lover he gets married to her elder sister. Then heartbroken Tita find solace in cooking and experience an unknown pleasure and comfort in it. She falls in love with cooking and invents recipes which had miraculously supernatural qualities. She offers all her love and passions to the food she cooked and made people fall for it effortlessly. Celie on the contrary have undergone much sexual suppression and insult from her family and husband. She was never independent and found less chance to explore her identity and sexuality. Once she had an encounter with shag , the mistress of her husband and she realize a woman can be strong and bold and can do much in her life with her own will power and self confidence. Celie having a sexual encounter with Shug realizes about her sexual potentiality and personality and becomes more confidence about her physical ability. She then by experiencing the strong attitude of Sophie finds out that women can be positive and demanding to gain a better status in men dominated world. Eventually, Celie feels a power of feminity and proceed further to start her own business of designing and tailoring pants .She later become independent and strong women who have persuaded her and desires and dreams for a better life. Common Aspects between Tita and Celie The common feature between Tita and Celie is that both are traumatized and exploited by their own family members. Both these women were at tender age when they had to face tragic events and were less able to cope up with it. They both did not have any family member of friends to console in and confide with. Tita and Celie were women Who were soft hearted and naïve, and did know much to handle the situation in an aggressive way. They were very sensitive and fragile and had to sacrifice their emotions, love and feelings for a family member who was cruel, self centered and ignorant. But both these women in due course, realized through experience that they have very unique creative power in them and utilized it in a unique way. Tita explored her creative talent in cooking whereas Celie becomes a business owner in later years. Both of these women in the end achieved the union with their partners and understood that life is a struggle and to achieve what you want one should use all the will power and determination one have. These women character Tita and Celie shows the world that women in older days had fewer rights to speak out their choices and desires and always were slave to elders of the family .They had to sacrifice a lot to attain some status in life and were not treated in the way they deserved. Being women they had to suppress their feelings and emotion and were puppets in the hands of others. Moreover, they show that being naïve and innocent only could lead them to end up in more trouble and suffering rather than being safe and sound. It could be very boldly stated here that, these women walked a path of suppression, hatred and rejection and in the end found a right path for themselves where they gained wisdom and courage to be self sufficient and independent.
