Adulthood, Aging and Adjustment to Death In the article, “Bobbi Kristina is Lovingly Haunted by the Ghost of Whitney Houston,” Malone (2012) gives an account of Bobbi’s life after the death of her mother and renowned singer, Whitney Houston. Bobbi admits to seeing ghosts of her mother switching the light on and off but importantly urging her to move on. The ghosts reassure her of support. Fitting this example into Kubler-Ross’ model could be challenging because it is a period after depression but before acceptance.

Bobbi has accepted that her mother is dead but she is neither sad nor in fear as is the case in the depression stage nor has she become emotionally detached as is the case with the acceptance stage (Nevid, 2009). Therefore, if I am to make changes to Kubler-Ross theory, it would be to include a phase between depression and acceptance, perhaps refer to it as recovery, where one is not sad over the death that has occurred but has not yet become emotionally detached. This course has made me appreciate the psychological process associated with aging.

Before, I appreciated that activity in late adulthood plays a critical role in ensuring a healthy life. This postulate was supported by the activity theory documented by Nevid (2009) which ties optimal adjustment to aging to continued involvement and activity. It was however interesting to note the counterargument given by the disengagement theory which, as noted by Sigelman and Rider (2012), supports withdrawal from society as being desirable in old age. This made me appreciate aging adjustment as being dependent on an individual.

Therefore, in my future personal life, I would seek for best approach through optimization and compensation to help me perform tasks well in my late adulthood.ReferencesMalone, L. (2012, December 3).
