Deflection What affects the deflection? Deflection takes place in the process of avoiding direct contact with less satisfying encounters. In some situations, some people feel helpless due to various dissatisfactions and end up failing to understand what they want. For instance, people yearning for power and wealth rarely get satisfied with what comes their way and in the end they become greedy as a symptom of deflection. Nevertheless, several emotions play a key part in dictating the kind of deflection one takes.

For instance, characteristic motions are emotions experienced by individuals as a result of confirmation of their identity by social events (MacKinnon, 1994). In the event of one reaffirming identity, most people result in compensatory behavior. In addition, structural emotions are also experienced by individuals in a certain social relationship. Such individuals tend to implement actions that tend to affirm current identity as well as enduring affective state. Lastly, some people experience consequent emotions as a result of their behaviors or that of others (MacKinnon, 1994).

As a result, such individual’s acts in anticipation with intent of bringing desired emotions. In all the above responses, it is apparent that they occur or act as defense mechanisms some of which are consciously resorted to while others are unconsciously resorted to. In summary, deflection might occur as a result of lack of motivation or self esteem that leads to a state of denial. This mostly happens when one fails to accept the reality. With such deliberations, it is apparent that emotions play a key role in determining the kind of deflection one takes.

Good emotional management can help individuals develop self confidence and motivations to do great thing rather than resorting to negative deflections.Reference:MacKinnon, N. (1994). Symbolic interactionism as affect control. Albany: State University of New York Press.
