Indeed, I agree with Johnson that drug abuse is huge social problem and it is increasing becoming a critical factor in the contemporary environment of fast paced life primarily because of the huge adverse impact on the society at large. One of the worst scenarios of drug abuse is violence and insecurity in the family life. The drug abuse through the use of alcohol consumption, illicit drugs and other types of substance abuse are the major causes of ‘domestic violence, failed marriages, and child abuse and neglect’ (Johnson, 1988).

The children are the innocent parties that carry the scar of drug abuse all through their life and become wary of forming normal relationships in their adult life. In fact, children who experience violence, neglect and insecurities due to substance abuse by their parents are observed to be caught into the vicious cycle of the drug abuse and not only carry the stigma of disturbed family but very often become victims of the circumstances and themselves become abuser in their later life. The article has been quite elaborative about the repercussions of use of alcohol and substance abuse by pregnant women.

The children of such mothers are often afflicted with physical and mental disabilities. The children carry the virus infection of dreaded diseases like HIV and AIDS, when their mothers get the same through intravenous drug use. The waste of innocent life and childhood has no compensation and the offenders must be restrained so the children can have the childhood that they deserve. Various surveys have shown that overt and covert use of drugs is largely responsible for road accidents leading to death and maiming.

There is significant financial loss and human lives through indiscriminate consumption of alcohol that causes car crashes, suicides etc. ‘Tobacco causes more than 400,000 per year’ in America (ibid),
