In each chapter, the book covers a different principle. For example, the first chapter is about “honor”. Joseph M. Marshall explains to us what honor is and how it is regarded in Native American, which is the Lakota society. The author then backs this principle with one or two folk stories which were person down verbally through the centuries: from the grandparent down to the grandchildren. As the reader continues to read this book, he can create a virtual picture of a fireside in the encampment on a dark night with the whole family gathering around and converse with each other about brave hearted warriors, star crossed lover who shared a lifetime together.

A classical example is the story of “No Moccasins” . This is a story that was so interesting that you will yearn for more teachings towards the end of the book. Nobody can tell the story of the life of a Lakota as well as Joseph M. Marshall. As a descendant of Crazy Horse, Marshall adopts Lakota spiritual wisdom and traditions and applies them to this to the contemporary lifestyle. He employs the use literary device like songs, folk songs, poetry to the fundamental ideas with regards the twelve principles of human character which will help the reader to understand life on a larger perception and know how to live in the world.

A story full of tales, folklore, history, The Lakota Way describes the heart of the Native American Philosophy and explains the noble path to a meaning and fulfilling life. Being a member of the Sicangu Lakota Sioux, Joseph Marshall is known to have dedicated his life to the wisdom he obtained from his elders. He put much emphasis on the twelve core qualities that were in line with the Lakota way of life. The teaching put forth by the mythical Deer woman and the humility that was embodied by the Lakota leader, Crazy Hourse, The Lakota Way offers the reader a fresh outlook of ethnic living and spiritual guidance.
