Introduction to Psychology Order No. 274055 No. of pages: 2 1st 6530 The largest in Kansas was Wichita that was founded in 1868 bythe Wichita Indians who made it their home and take pride that their community had earned the national distinction of being called an “All American City.” It also takes pride in being nicknamed the “Air Capital of the World” because it was a home to the Boeing, Learjet, Cessna and Ratheon.Wichita was not only a booming city but it had one of the best economies of the nation, but unfortunately this thriving city had to witness one of the goriest occurrences that took place during that time.

It took off as a spark of fantasy, matured over time and suddenly turned to a reality of frustration and hate. Finally it became an obsession which demanded to be fulfilled. The killer found that photos and trophies that were substitute for the thrill of putting an end to life that electrified his very soul. He believed that he was smarter than the cops and could easily outwit them. The element of danger added to his perverted excitement. It was a chilly winter day on January 15th, 1974 the Charlie Otero came home from school only to find his parents and four siblings murdered in the most ghastly fashion.

All the victims had their hands and feet bound together and were placed head down Except for his sister Josephine who was hung by her neck from a pipe and was only partially dressed with a sweatshirt and socks. Her little brother Joseph had three hoods placed on his head and was lying face down at the foot of the bed. The purse of Julie Otero was dumped and the father Joseph Otero Sr. missing watch there was no evidence of either a robbery, a struggle of forced entry. The search was on by the Wichita Police Department who investigated and found that the four murders took place between eight and nine in the morning.

The conduct of the parents as well as the children was extremely good and invited no enmity which made the murders all the more shocking.Nine months after the murders of the Otero family, in October 1974, and anonymous call was received by the Wichita Eagle’s Don Granger and receive directions to go to the Wichita library and looking into a mechanical engineering text book. Action was taken and they found a letter detailing the murders of the Otero family and promising other victims in the future.

He said he was guilty of the murders but can’t stop the monster in his head. His code words are – “Bind them, torture them, Kill them – BTK and warned that they will see it on the next victim. On April 4th, 1974, his next victim came in the form of Kathryn Bright a girl of twenty who was stabbed three times in the abdomen and could not be saved even though her brother Kevin got help and took her to the hospital. On March 17th, 1977 three years later, Shirley Vian a 26 year old was his next victim who was strangled with the BTK’s signature cord.

Again on December 8th panic spread once again with the murder of Nancy Fox a 25 year old who was killed with a nylon stocking about her neck. In another letter to the Wichita police the murderer had claimed to have taken 7 lives totally and desperately wanted it to be published in the papers. A task force was set up in July 1984 and they called themselves the “Ghostbusters” who went on an investigating mission to catch the culprit. After taking a lot of DNA and saliva samples and eliminating many of the suspects, they found that the BTK killer only murdered in places that were familiar to him.

A letter written on February 10th 1978, was taken to a Xerox headquarter in Syracuse where the technician told him that it was a fifth generation copy of an original and the machine that had been used to type it was at the Wichita State University library. All the poems in the letter were related to the different victims and had been previously published in books or magazines. The key piece of evidence in the case was the semen of the murderer.Once again on Oct. 31 1987, police found the body of Shannon Olson a 15year old, disrobed partially and stabbed many times.

Again the murderer stuck Mary Fager’s family, when she returned from work on Dec. 31st 1987 and found her two daughters and her husband dead. The killer is not found till date but he is said to be a loner in his late twenties or early thirties. They suppose that BTK might be in some mental asylum or caught for some other crime and is now in jail.ReferencesBTK Kansas Serial Killer – Full Story.www.trutv.com/library/crime/serial_killers/unsolved/btk/index_1.html
