Valar forgot why he was there and for how long, content to sip on the draught Lazuli poured him and smoked his thin long pipe for which he found more weed in the vegetation around than he could have used. He did not ask who she was and how she came to be in this remote deep he asked no questions at all, just listened to the murmur of Lazuli's voice that held all the music of lapping waves, of sighing trees and the whistling wind, and never thought to interrupt. To talk would ruin this effortless tune, and he let it be.

Lazuli had cattle, which Valar now took under his charge, and they flourished. But his eyes were only for her. He waited for a token of affection, a hushed word, a slanted look, but he got none from Lazuli. Mornings became evenings, evenings to nights, and nights became mornings again, and this went on for the space of many moons.

Of an evening when Valar would want to chat by the fireside and charm Lazuli with one tale or another, he would soon be drowsy and find himself falling asleep. Lazuli would laughingly send him off to sleep, and the first rays of the Sun would gently prod his face to wakefulness the next morning. And so Valar's heart kept its own counsel, longing to speak out, yet unable to do so. Months and years passed. Valar now had speckles of gray on his dark head, he could no longer run after the cattle as he used to. But the gold on Lazuli's head had waned not a bit, and she continued to smile at him each morning with her young carnation lips and old turquoise eyes.

Fording an unfamiliar stream one day to take the cattle to better pastures, Valar came across a still pool, shimmering in the sunlight, his clear reflection upon it. He had begun to feel his age, and he saw it now. The urge took him to accost Lazuli now, to confess his love for her this very moment, and learn of her will, before his age caught up. At a mad pace he ran, till he came to Lazuli's cottage. He found her bending over a spindle, hard at work. He touched her, and she was startled. He told her of his feelings, pleading, raging, cajoling, but she merely looked at him with calm, untrammeled eyes and said nothing. Valar spoke with all the ardor of his pent-up emotions but soon found he had no voice.

He had begun to sink, slowly, and inevitably, his legs giving way under him. The glaring light of the high noon seemed to become dim, and soon Valar could move no more. Everything seemed very far, yet painfully near. And in this dreamlike trance, he heard Lazuli's voice, not magically musical as it had always been, but plain and purposeful, yet compassionate.

Lazuli spoke to him of past lifetimes, when they had been together, when she had passed on earlier or he and they had not been with each other for long, and when they were they fought. Yet they always sought each other out But after long ages, now that they were free of malice, of jealousy, of anger, of egos and vanity, they had been given a chance again. She was here to welcome him, and to let him carry his feelings for her without expression, till he found it in him to speak of them.

And now that he had professed his love for this last time, a love unconditional and constant, they did not need to be apart any longer. Together they would be through all the suns and moons in this world, and together in the worlds beyond, untouched by time, age, injury, death, or decay. And all will say till the end of days, that they lived happily ever after. Read More
