"Asperger’s Syndrome: Diagnosis and Treatment" is a perfect example of a paper on genetic and birth defects. Asperger’s syndrome is one of the most well-known and ill-defined (Connor, 2011) developmental disorders, and the most common in the autistic spectrum (Attwood, 2008). These properties make it an intensely interesting but at times difficult discussion topic. Introduction

Asperger’s syndrome is categorized in a number of ways, by the DSM-IV, ICD-10, and Gillberg & Gillberg criteria (amongst others), but shares many of the features of other autistic spectrum disorders but with fairly good preservation of linguistic and cognitive skills (Schalock et al, 2010).

Background Information

Use the introduction and background information sections to discuss the main symptoms & epidemiology (prevalence).

Thesis Statement

Asperger’s Syndrome is a complex disorder that causes a number of difficulties for the affected, but there are numerous diagnoses and treatment options that can help.

Point 1

One of the most difficult aspects of dealing with Asperger’s Syndrome is their difficulties in dealing with everyday symptoms (Gomez et al, 2010).

Those suffering from Asperger’s Syndrome often have difficulties in social situations. They may fail to pick up on ‘normal’ facial expressions and body language, which can lead to embarrassing and difficult events (Attwood, 2008).

Point 2

Diagnosis for Asperger’s is difficult and subjective, especially considering the number of definitions provided (Schalock et al, 2010).

However, diagnosis for Asperger’s Syndrome generally relies on anecdotal evidence from family members suggesting that they are experiencing difficulties with social situations (Schalock et al, 2010).

Diagnosis may also rely on noticing the common co-morbid conditions, which include depression and anxiety disorders (Toth & King, 2008).

Point 3

The treatment for Asperger’s Syndrome varies and again relies heavily on the opinion of the doctor (Attwood, 2008).

Treatment can be split into two main categories; therapy and medication.

Therapy is similar to that of other developmental disorders and may include cognitive behavioral therapy, occupational therapy, and social communication ‘lessons’ to combat the social problems those with Asperger’s suffer (Klin & Volkmar, 2008).

There are no officially approved medications for Asperger’s Syndrome. Some doctors may treat for co-morbid conditions, such as depression and anxiety, with atypical antipsychotic medications like Risperidone (Klin & Volkmar, 2000).

Conclusion

Asperger’s Syndrome is a complex developmental disorder that can cause difficulties in everyday situations. Although diagnosis is complex, it can be important for the sufferer to understand their social interaction problems and perhaps identify co-morbid conditions. Treatment for Asperger’s Syndrome remains largely experimental but can include therapy and some medications.
