Mystery of the fall [Coarse Prequel of Fall of the House of Usher - ‘Mystery of the Fall’ On March5, 1901, the incident took place in the town of North Yorkshire where several workers died in the factory due to fire, William Usher, Roderick Usher and his other business partners were found guilty for this incident but they did not get imprisoned as they were the noble elite of the town and had control on the authorities and law making agencies of the town) On September 9, 1908, people of North Yorkshire were gathered around the shore of the river and watching two men who were struggling to pull out something heavy out of the water. Finally they became succeed to heave out the big brown sack made of jute from the river. People were murmuring that either it was the sack full of treasure that slipped out of some pirate’s ship or the sack full of crops or other useful things that used to be imported to other countries through this river. The tall man who had cereal complexion and had big blue sparkling eyes whose name was John Smith came closer to the sack that was recently fetched out of the water and started observing it. Afterwards, he asked people to help him out to open the sack. After few minutes, they successfully opened the mouth of the sack. People came closer to the sight to know that what this mysterious sack actually possess. The moment when John opened the mouth of the sack, everyone became astonish and stepped back from the sack. It was the dead body of a person who was killed ferociously. At the forehead of the dead body, there were some deep wounds, which showed that his head had been hit several times by some heavy object and there was a deep cut at the neck that showed that the murderer used something sharp like knife or axe to kill the victim. It was not the first times that such dead body appeared in the locality of the town. The long chain of murders that had been occurring since last six months followed this dead body and all the dead bodies had the similarity that was the cut on their neck that proved that their murderer is the same person who was responsible for fright and terror among the people of the town. This chain of serial killing was not ended yet and right after a week from the incident of lake, there was another dead body found near the church of the town. This time the dead body was of an old man who was the famous businessman named William Usher. William was killed so viciously, and his body had the same cut on the neck. Along with the dead body there was a note in which it was written, “The revenge is not over yet." While the constable was observing the dead body, there was someone shouted at the end of the street that “please don’t kill me… please help somebody.. help!!!." It grabbed the attention off the crowd, and they started running toward the boy. Suddenly, the killer pushed the boy apart from him and ran away. He was wearing a black coat along with a big round hat and from his physique he seemed like 23-25 years aged boy. People helped the boy to stand up who was so frightened (who asked for help), and constable asked, “Who are you? Who was that man who tried to kill you??" The boy started speaking in his trembling voice that “I saw him killing my father... I tried to save my father but could not make it...." He was shivering with fright, and his eyes were full of tears that showed his deep grief. He continued speaking “I hit the killer with the iron rod that wounded him… but it seemed like it did not make any harm to him… I again tried to hit him... But he took the rod from my hand and hit my head with it... I couldn’t see his face …it was covered... When I came back to my senses... That brute was dragging my father towards the stairs of the church… I could see my father was dead…” Then the boy hid his face with hands and started crying roughly. After few minutes, the constable asked the boy to tell him further about the incident. Boy was sobbing, but he managed to speak in his shaky voice that “after putting my father’s body at the stairs of the church… he came back to me... He tried to kill me with his sharp knife as he killed my father… but suddenly when I started to shout he saw the people coming toward him... So that... He ran… before leaving… the last words that he said to me were… The revenge is not over yet." After this last murder police and intelligence of the town started to investigate the reasons behind this serial killing but there were no evidences regarding the murderer except the boy who saw him, but at that time murderer’s face was covered. Police were helpless in this case. This case was given to the inspector John Smith, who was the childhood friend of the boy. John Smith was known for his bluntness and wisdom. When he started investigating the case, he found William Ushers servant responsible for William’s death as a black coat, big round cap and the knife with spot of blood were found from his stuff that were hidden under the ground of William’s Backyard. At the time of the murder, the servant was off from the duty. All the facts and evidences were against the servant who was later imprisoned to death. During the investigation, John Smith and the boy (William Usher’s son) named Roderick Usher became more attached and closed with each other. After the arresting and death of the servant Roderick left the town with his sister Madeline and started living in an old mansion that was the property of his ancestor but the relation between him and John grew stronger day by day through the exchange of letters. Even though, they never met in a while until Roderick asked him to come over his house in order to help him out as he was going through some mental disorder and was feeling helpless in such circumstances (Allan Poe, The Fall of The House of Usher, 1907). John Smith has received a letter from Roderick in which he asked him to come to his place and spend some time with him as he was feeling alone and having illness (Allan Poe, The Fall of the House of Usher, 2004). John wrote a Letter to confirm Roderick about his arrival to his house. After wrapping up the letter, he placed it with another letter on the table on which it was written “We will meet my love" that shows that it was the letter that John had written for his Beloved girl friend who lived in some town in south region of the country that was so far away from Rodericks town soon. After some days John left the town to meet Roderick. When he reached the mansion, he saw Roderick is standing outside the mansion that seems like he was desperately waiting to meet his childhood friend John after a long time. Roderick cheerfully hugged john and led him towards the hall of his house where Madeline was already sitting on a chair placed along the big dining table. Roderick introduced John with her sister Madeline. They both joined Madeline at tea where they exchanged some words and Roderick asked John about his Family that, “I never met your family... Where do they live?” John said, “I only had my father in my family who died before six months in the fire incident of the factory in the Yorkshire." Roderick got astound and tried to hide his expressions as he was also found guilty for the incident, rest of the responsible person died through serial killing. Suddenly, the servant arrived and asked Roderick to come outside to meet someone on the door. Just right after when Roderick left the hall, both John and Madeline came closer and hugged each other, Madeline said angrily that, “Why you took so long to come here… you do not know that how many times I forced Roderick to invite you here... do you remember how many letters have I sent to you???... Finally, you are here my love… now together we can put our plot into reality… this property will be our… everything will be our... We will live happily here for the rest of our life after Roderick’s death,” she had an evil smile on her face. John and Madeline started to put the plot into reality and began Roderick to realize that the house was haunted, and Madeline was going through the mental disorder that took her life. John helped Roderick to entombed Madeline in the vault of the mansion that was as according to the plan of John and Madeline (Matthews, 2014). At night John took her out of the vault and hid her in the old room of the mansion that was locked for the years so that no one could know that Madeline was now in that room. According to the plan Madeline started making noise and beating the wall of the vault that gave Roderick the impression that she was buried alive. John brought all his efforts to make Roderick believe, what they want him to believe. According to the plan Madeline would be the only heir of the Roderick’s property after the death of Roderick, and then she and John would get marry. The night when John and Madeline had to put their final plot into actuality which included the breaking of the wall of the vault, reappearance of Madeline as living dead and killing of Roderick. John and Madeline successfully put their plot and killed Roderick. After Roderick’s death John left the place in order to find labor to get rid of Roderick’s dead body and asked Madeline to wait until he came back. After few minutes of leaving the house, the house exploded and sank into the dark. John saw the whole scene astonished, and suddenly he had a wicked smile on his face and said, “the revenge is over now” and left the place. Reference List Allan Poe, E. (1907).
