Extract of sample "The Old Social System in China"

Chinese women are enshrined in a forty-year-old heritage of socialism that has promoted the economic insufficiency of women. In the end, divorced women remain with no source of livelihood, lose their rights, and have to continue the dependence theory in which they have to remarry. The story details how Chinese women are now interested in work and employment opportunities, rather than love and family ties.

The story is from a feminist perspective, in which society presumes that women are the victims of a divorce. Zhu LXiaofen desperately tries to convince people that she wanted the divorce and feels quite liberated. The chauvinistic society sees men as superior, and women are prejudiced as the ‘second’ or ‘weaker’ sex, dependent on men. Her friends do not seem to understand the joy she has as a free woman without any obligations to a man. She now has a chance to enhance her self-development, something that she could not do under the constraints of her husband.
