Reflection Module Competency Understanding self and others It is necessary for a leader to possess a clear self-concept through private self-consciousness, to have a strong purpose-in-life. Having a strong purpose involves consistency in self-identity and this clear awareness of “self” translates to a clearer sense of goal and purpose which will evolve as a Self-Belief. Self-belief which inspires confidence from others to be able the manager or leader to direct them towards a common vision. But inorder to direct them towards a common direction, a leader or manager must first understand them, their differences and what makes them an individual. This can be done by an increased awareness and sensitivity as well as effectively communicating to them that the leader and manager is also understood. 2. Communicating honestly and effectively One of the most important facet of communicating effectively is being honest and transparent. Being honest does not only mean the absence of deception but also on communicating without hidden agenda. When people suspects that an individual who is relaying the information has hidden agenda, the recipients will become defensive rendering the communicator ineffective no matter how good a communicator or she is. Module 2: Competency 1. Organizing information flows Organiztion in any organization abounds and effective manager has to know how to sift through them and be able to discern which is pertinent and useful. There are a lot of electronic information tools availabe today to facilitate communication but one could easily get lost and overwhelmed by the sheer number of information it could bring. Thus, an effective manager has to manage them and not fell into the trap of information overload. Effective communication does not only necessitate the ability to acquire data. Sometimes, too much information can be counterproductive as it bogs down effective communication. An effective leader knows which information to use and how to use them in a manner that is appropriate to a particular audience. 2. Working and managing across functions People in an organization has to work together inorder to achieve a certain task, goal, project or objective. This involves not only working within one’s immediate team but also across departments and functions in the whole organization to take advantage of other function’s competency. The necessity of working and managing across functions is now becoming more and more frequent and more necessary because productivity today entails cooperation and inputs from other functions in the organization. But people has different value system, perspective, opinions and even working style and this differences can be counterproductive if is not overcomed by an effective communication between two functions. This also necessitates sharing of information which has to be communicated clearly and effectively. Miscommunication or the bogging down of communication has to be avoided for people across function because failure in communication can lead to conflict which may prove to be detrimental to the performance of an organization’s various functions. Module 3: Competency 1. Developing and communicating a vision Vision is the direction which an organization wants to take. It guides every act in the organization with the end of achieving such vision. Without vision, an organization will not have a purpose and direction and thus will eventually become irrelevant as an organization and in the market as it does not pursue to achieve anything. Developing and communication a vision is essential to an organization because it breathes life and meaning to it that animates every employee to do better both as an individual and an organization. To be able to do this, the company’s vision has to be effectively communicated to every employee in the organization for them to relate to the bigger purpose of the organization. A vision that has a clear purpose facilitated by effective communication brings meaning to all entities in an organization and this sense of purpose lifts the organization to heights and to achieve great things. 2. Setting goals and objectives Just like vision, goals and objectives guides every act in an organization. But unlike vision which is considered the organization’s motherhood statement of which it is vague, goals and objectives are concrete and measurable. For example, organizational goals can be spelled as 25% increase in sales in the next two years or objective of becoming the largest provider of computers in the whole of United States. Goals and objectives are important because without them, there would no way to determine to measure the performance of an orgnization. Goals and objectives however will not be achieved if it is not properly communicated to individuals concerned in an orgnization. Not knowing what to achieve just because it was not properly communicated is counterproductive because it defeats the purpose of setting up a goal. Module 4: Competency 1. Using power and influence ethically and effectively Power is necessary to get things done. It directs people towards a common objective which benefits all. Having power meant that a leader has the capacity to make things happen, to achieve a certain vision, goals and objectives. But power does not necessarily emanates from those who have authority over us such as our teachers and bossess. They could be anybody who has influenced us. They could be the authors of a book we read or the speaker we heard in a seminar. This attests that a person who has an effective communicate skill has power to wield to influence the thoughts of others. This power to influence others has to be used ethically though. It has to be used to better the individual, or in the case of an organization, to motivate others to do better and achieve the oganization’s vision, goals and objectives. 2. Championing and selling new ideas New ideas are the ones that improves or revolutionizes an organization. But such ideas no matter how brilliant they are will be for naught if it will not be communicated to the organization effectively. Communication serves as the bridge or the medium whereby its recipients can appreciate the merit of new ideas that would make its acceptance or mplementation possible. Read More
