The Hammurabi Stele is a representation of justice and fairness which was the most intricately followed values in the ancient Mesopotamian civilization. 2. Athleticism: Athleticism is a significant value in humanities. This value is selected from Greece. The Kouros statues (boys) are a historical sculpture in Greece that represents the value of athleticism which was widely followed in this civilization and was an integral part of the Greek culture at the time when this statue was constructed. 3. Security: The third value selected for discussion in the paper is security. This is selected from the civilization of Babylon. Babylon is a famous ancient civilization. The Ishtar Gate of Babylon is a massive gate built by the then king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar II as a representation of the assurance of security for the people of Babylon. The Ishtar Gate is a famous historical creation which signifies the values like safety and security. Value 1 Justice Discussion The ancient Mesopotamian civilization is a famous and widely studied civilization in history. The Mesopotamian civilization is one of the oldest civilizations in the world. The Hammurabi Stele is a sculpture that has the codes of Hammurabi encrypted in it. This code includes 282 laws that were followed at that time in the culture of Mesopotamia. These codes represent the justice system existing in the Mesopotamian civilization at that time. These laws were meant to be followed in the civilization and were distinct for the general people and the slaves in the civilization. All the 282 laws included varied types of punishments that were given to the offenders. The punishments were decided according to the intensity and severity of the offense. The laws engraved in the Hammurabi stele covered topics like trade, slander, theft, the duties of laborers and workers, slavery, food etc. The codes of law engraved in the Hammurabi Stele of Mesopotamia belong to the group of the oldest codes of laws formulated and implemented in the history of the world. The codes of laws included in the Hammurabi Stele of Mesopotamia indicate that justice has been an age old concept which has existed in early civilization. Also, it suggests that despite being one of the earliest civilizations in history, Mesopotamia was a much developed and advanced civilization in its time. Reflective opinion According to my personal view, justice is an important value in humanities. It can be established from the study of the code of laws in the Hammurabi Stele of the Mesopotamian civilization that justice had been a well formed concept in the ancient civilizations. Also, justice is a significant and relevant concept in the present day scenario as well. Justice is a core value that is necessary in human societies. Justice can be defined as the basic concept of right and wrong and is a crucial element of moral righteousness and the moral value system existing in the human society. The concept of justice has its foundations in different dimensions and perspectives which include the concepts of moral judgment. Moral judgment may be based on rationality, ethics, equality, law, equity, religion and fairness. The concept of justice has been varying in the history of the world and today also, justice as a moral concept has different meanings in different cultures of the world. This is because all the cultures of the world are built upon varying foundations which include shared histories, religion and mythology. Justice can be segregated into two broad heads. These are distributive justice and retributive justice. Though these differentiations were not existent as theoretical concepts in the ancient civilization, yet they were present in some form in the civilizations as old as the Mesopotamian civilization. In my opinion, justice is highly significant and impeccable in the modern world as well. Moral righteousness is what makes the human beings different from other species on the earth. As I have identified from various studies, justice has evolved in a major way over time. Justice can be evaluated from different realms and include social justice, economic jute, environmental justice and justice in democratic decision making. In my opinion, social justice is mandatory in the human society and has been embedded in the human societies since early days. Without a fair level of justice, the modern societies and civilizations would crumble under the pressure of immoral decisions and functions. As per my view, social justice is one of the most significant pillars of the modern human society. Value 2 Athleticism Discussion There are several examples of the values of the athleticism in the ancient Greece. Different architectures and the sculptures of the ancient Greece are the clear indications of their athletic values. The Kouros statues (boys) are the clear indications that reflect young athlete boys of the Ancient Greece. The whole architectural ideas represent the then importance for athleticism in the ancient Greece. Physical fitness and the athleticism were given significant priorities in those days. Athleticism was very eminent in those days. Greek athletes were significant competitive in their athletic endeavourers. According to the historical evidences, in 776 B.C one of the most important athletics competitions were organized which is currently known as Olympics. By the time of 6th century the value of athleticism engulfed the whole nation. Panhellenic games were introduced during that period of time. Those games involved all the Greek people only. Those games were held in Delphi, Isthmia and Nemea. Athletes who use to emerge as the winners in those games were significantly felicitated by the people of their local communities and relatives. It was a symbol of masculinity in the ancient Greece. Ancient Greek people had a deep rooted thinking that physical strengths and athleticism is the unique value that they posses and separate them from the non- Greek people. Kouros statues show that masculine athleticism of the young Greek boys. The whole values of athleticism are significantly clear and prominent in the statues and showing athletic nature of the youth of ancient Greece. Reflective opinion According to my view, athleticism is a value which helps to create good and civilized human being. I think that athleticism was one of the most important values among the ancient Greece people. They took athleticism seriously. It was significantly deep rooted inside the culture of the whole nation. Athletic people were considered one of the most important assets of the country and that is why they were being taken care of in different ways. Their social statures were also significantly different than others. The value of athleticism was use to separate them from the normal crowds. Greek people use to worship the Appolo as the God of Sun. Athletes was so important to them that they were considered as the part of God. Athleticism was related with the day to day lives of the Greek people. According to my reflection, the value of athleticism was so important that it use to decide the social status of a young boy. People of ancient Greece were so involved with athleticism that they always has spent significant amount of money and energy to maintain this value. The value of athleticism has been given significant priority in those days. This value also enjoyed considerable patronage from the royal families of the country. They anticipated that athleticism is a value which will help the country to become strong in future. Greek people always have encouraged athleticism. Different athletics related events in those days are the clear cut evidence of the fact. I feel that ancient Greece was a nation which understood the value of athleticism before than any other countries in the world. Value 3 Security Discussion The magnificent city of Babylon was founded in 1867 BC. During the tenure of Nebuchadnezzar II, the main objective was to provide a sense of security to the people of the city. Ishtar gate was the 8th gate of the city of Babylon. The gate was created in the 575 BC. Security was an important matter in those days and the gate was created by keeping that thing in mind. The Babylonian king was significantly focused towards securing his followers. That sense of security assistance was eminent in his thinking. The height of the gate is 47 feet and the width of the gate is 32 Feet. This gigantic gate signifies the values of security in the ancient Babylon city. The city was located by the bank of Euphrates River and it was the cradle of the modern civilized world. The city witnessed inflow of people from different countries across the world. To protect the citizens of the city security was an important value for the people of the Babylon as well as for the king. Ishtar Gate is the reflection of that security. Pictures of lions on the gate signify the sense of security. The magnificent architecture of the humongous gate indicates one message i.e. the city of Babylon is secured by the God. It also indicates that the security provisions of the city. The values of security are significantly clear. Security of the people was a significant priority for the king. The people of Babylon and king gave enough importance to the value of security. Reflective opinion I feel an attractive place like Babylon attracts people across the world. Some people are with good intentions and some people are with bad intentions, people with bad intentions try to invade a beautiful city like Babylon. According to my reflection, security is a value which was given significant importance in those days in Babylon. The values was so important to them that king Nebuchadnezzar II used costly stone like lapis lazuli as the blue brick of the Ishtar gate. King was serious about the security of the whole city and it inspired him to construct a gigantic gate of 47 feet long. I feel the people of Babylon were able to sense the importance of security and protection from the outside forces. I feel the reason behind giving so much importance to security was due to the abundance of the natural resources of the city. According to my view security is an important value which is the basic right of any human being in the world. The idea was significantly identified during the ancient time and that is why the gigantic gate was constructed. Sense of security provides confidence among the citizens of a city. This kind of confidence is urgently required for a successful city or a country. As far as my consideration, the king of Babylon tried to impose that sense of confidence among his citizens by providing them security. Read More
