The application of the 13thAmendment would permanently abolish slavery and end the American civil war from the United States. The film Lincoln is based on a defining moment of the civil war and proposal of amendment for abolishing slavery. The film is directed by master filmmaker, Steven Spielberg. The theme of believing is effectively depicted throughout the film. Steven Spielberg meticulously examined Abraham Lincoln and successfully depicted the moral fortitude, courage and acumen of the iconic figure. The film Lincoln focuses on the tumultuous five months of the 16th president. Abraham Lincoln pursues a determination and courage of action at the time of nation divided by strong wind of change and war. The purpose of the report is to effectively analyze three particular scenes of the movie such as the House Debate, a new amendment and Lincoln’s dream. Thesis statement “The respective scenes of the film, such as Lincoln’s Dream, a new Amendment and the House Debate effectively justify the plot of the epic historical drama film Lincoln”. Analysis The courage of action pursued by Abraham Lincoln to abolish slavery, end the war and unite the country provides knowledge of fierce determination and moral courage of the 16th President of the United States. According to Lincoln, the introduction of the 13th Amendment can only abolish slavery. The American Civil War is regarded as one of the most traumatic experiences in the history of United States. The war occurred between secessionist Confederacy and northern Union of states. The American Civil war was fought from 1861 to 1865. 11 southern slave states of secessionist Confederacy were defeated by northern Union of Sates. The war involved the eleven southern states and the government of the United States of America. Confederate States of America is government formed by eleven southern states. On June 16th, 1858, Abraham Lincoln was nominated for the Senate. In January 1865, the drastic outcome of American Civil war was expected to be stopped by the President Abraham Lincoln. The pivotal concern of Lincoln was the abandon of Emancipation Proclamation by the courts. The film Lincoln opens to provide flashback of the Battle of Jenkins Ferry. Lincoln’s Dream (Scene 1) One of the respective scenes of the film is Lincoln’s Dream. This plot provides an effective knowledge about courage and determination of Abraham Lincoln to abolish slavery. The film provides a visualization of recent dreams of Abraham Lincoln. The event of dreams occurred during night and at the interior White House. The plot of the scene occurred after six minutes. At the White house, Abraham Lincoln describes bad dream to wife Mary Todd Lincoln (Emerson 34). The precognitive dream of Lincoln was about assassination. Abraham Lincoln described dream through the Bible. Lincoln stated that “lots of things are said in the Bible and if people believe Bible, then they must also believe that angels and gods came in the sleep known as dreams”. One of the friends of Lincoln was Colonel Ward Hill Lamon. Lamon revealed that Lincoln was horrified by amazingly real dreams. Moreover, the main subject of discussion between Mary and Abraham Lincoln was about push for the 13th Amendment. The scene of Lincoln’s dream is as true to history and it justifies the accuracy of dream. The beginning of the film provides an effective knowledge and dramatizes the historical recurring dreams of Abraham Lincoln. The dream of boat going faster than normal time is describe by wife Mary Lincoln as reflection of main motive. The willpower of Lincoln to push Congress to pass the 13th Amendment is the main theme of dreams (Foner 28).The original fearful dream of Lincoln is being effectively incorporated with the scenes. The scenes provideknowledge for viewers to visualize the dreams. Moreover, Lincoln used to determine that dreams are real. The grip of dreams is increased by the weakness of Lincoln by trying to visualize dreams as real. Lincoln also stated that “the dreams have got the total possession and it will not go”. The dream became so horrified that it an imaginary sound of invisible mourners. Lincoln walked around the White House and eventually found out that no one has entered the East Room. This fear of dreams is effectively presented in the movie. A New Amendment (scene 2) Second respective scene a new Amendment also provides a clear message that it is true to history and effectively justifies the plot of the film Lincoln. At the White House, Seward and Abraham Lincoln continue their discussion about the application of necessary steps that can help to reduce slavery. The reason of discussion was for the betterment of the United States of America which was affected by the consequence of Civil War. According to Lincoln, the introduction of 13th Amendment can help to abolish slavery. The movie provides a stern examination of Lincoln to be strong and determined to fight against slavery. According to history, the 13th Amendment is regarded as one of the first Reconstruction Amendments that has been adopted to abolish involuntary servitude and slavery. The original clause of Constitution such as Three-Fifths Compromise hastacitly protected slavery. In 1863, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation declared free to slaves. The post-war outcome of the Civil War was still uncertain and difficult to predict the future consequences of the war. Great Britain was the pivotal cause of introduction of slavery to the American colonies. The first constitutional provision was created after the wake of the Civil War. In 1860, Abraham Lincoln was voted as president. A nation was inherited by Lincoln and aroused many questions that the negative outcome of slavery could even spread in to the Western territories (Fortune 42). The western expansion is opposed by Lincoln and also believed that the government of United States of America was not authorized to ban the existence of slavery. In 1861, Lincoln started a war against the Confederacy with an aim to disrupt the system of westward expansion of slavery. Moreover, Lincoln worked in the early days of Presidency to expand the black population and deal with the issue of slavery. Primarily, Lincoln denied the entrance of black men in to the military. This is mainly because the fear of losing white support from northern territory. Eventually after the end of Civil War, Lincoln’s army listed more than 186,000 black men. The declaration of wartime emancipation from Abraham Lincoln has prompted Congress to ensure the permanent abolition of slavery. The film provided a clear illustration of adoption of 13th Amendment. Mr. and Mrs. Jolly, Seward, Lincoln and Missouri continued their discussion on new Amendment at the 2ndfloor office of White House. The main reason behind the discussion is the application of 13th Amendment for the betterment of the society and abolishment of slavery (Bois 15). The discussion about the passage of Amendment started with the Secretary of State Seward. The extensive conference with the Secretary stated the determination and perseverance of Abraham Lincoln. The particular scene of Amendment follows historical nuances. Most part of the movie contains the effective implementation of political ideas to gain vote. The gaining of vote can result in to the pass of the 13th Amendment. The political wrangling has created more difficult for Lincoln to pass the amendment. Lincoln passed the amendment to the Senate; eventually it was beaten in the House. The House Debate (scene 3) The American Civil War conflict of 19861-1865 is also labeled as total war. The label of total war is earned through the analysis of the scope of the conflict and the intensity of the Civil War. The Civil war is regarded as one of the deadliest war in the History of America. The drastic occurrence of World War I foreshadowed the mobilization of food supplies, mines, banks, shipyards and transportation. The inaugural address of Lincoln declared that administration is not accepting the occurrence of American Civil War. Emancipation Proclamation is issued by Lincoln to create a goal. The main goal of the war is to end slavery. The South Caroline Secession is viewed by Lincoln as illegal. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln pledged to go for war and led Union to Victory (Murirn 411). The history background on the scene House of Representatives justifies the episodes featured in the film. The House of Representatives was effectively debating regarding the application of Confederate peace and 13th Amendment. As the time of House debate, Abraham Lincolns was solely focused on early five weeks of the year 1865. The introduction of 13th Amendment would not only help to prohibit involuntary servitude and abolish of slavery, but also nullifies the Fugitive Slave Cause. In addition to this, Amendment an also help to nullify Three-Fifths Compromise. In the House of Representatives, the resolution of apportionment of seats requires three-fifths of the population of slaves. The series of insults are traded between Radical Republicans and Fernando Wood from New York. This continuation of series of insults and Civil War era of politics are portrayed in the scene of House Debate. In 1859, offenses to Southern Collective honor involved the actions of John Brown (Zinn 51). John is one of the abolitionists who tried to ignite the slave rebellion. Several plans were strategized at the packed gallery to abolish slavery and adoption of 13th Amendments. Therefore, it can be stated that all the defining moment of the film is based on historical accuracy. Conclusion It can be concluded that the respective scenes of the movie such as The House Debate, Lincoln’s dream and a new Amendment effectively follow the historical accuracy and justifies every plot of the movie Lincoln.
