Extract of sample "Evidence-Based Practice toward Optimizing Clinical Outcomes"

Hypertension prevalence among African Americans was mapped out using the literature search that also helped in identifying aspects of the clinical problem of interest that have not been researched (Gerrish & Lacey, 2010).

Specific databases and other sources of evidence

CINAHL and Medline are the specific databases that were used in the literature search. Cochrane and Embase are extra sources in this search (Salisbury, Glasziou & Slaisbury, 2007).

Plan for narrowing the literature search

As a plan for narrowing the search to find quality sources on hypertension among African Americans, the search will begin with the phrase: hypertension among African Americans. The initial search should help identify randomized controlled trials on hypertension treatment among African Americans.

The clinical problem of interest is the issue that a study sets out to research.

The population is the total number of people affected by the clinical problem under study.

Intervention refers to the actions aimed at addressing clinical problems.

Comparison is the major alternative to an intended intervention.

Outcome denotes the result of applying intervention to a clinical problem.

A PICO question is one that is answerable and researchable.

(Gerrish & Lacey, 2010)
