The Correlation between Parenting Style and Academic Performance al Affiliation) The main objective of the paper is to examine the correlation between the parenting style and academic performance. Data from 382 participants was examined using the parenting style measure, academic engagement, and the pointy average for the grades. The outcome shows that the academic performance correlated the relationship between the academic performance and the parenting style. The implication for the future studies is also discussed at length. The academic engagement was used as a mediator in the correlation between the academic performance and the parenting style. Introduction The academic performance issue among the students continue to be a concern among the educators, researchers, and scholars. Most of the researchers focused on the achievement gap with a greater concern on comprehending that factors contributing to the differential academic results. Countries like Canada has recorded a rise in the number of children having the risk factors that might compromise the achievement and their future success. Approximately 27 per cent are considered to fail in school. Additionally, 21.9 Million California and 1.96 M females dropped out of school. For instance in Iran, 22 per cent of the students suffered from the poor academic achievement (Green 1989). This is attributed to the personal problems and family problems. It is argued that academic performance are connected to various factors associated to home setting such as parenting style and the involvement of the parents. It is conventional taken that parenting is parental responsibility and a thankless activity that starts from the point a child is born. Parenting is made to be a hurdle by the concern that parents would wish to success in raising their children. The parenting task is one of the crucial variable that is widely researched in the human development fields. It is evident that there is a correlation between the parenting style and the academic performance of the students. According to Vygotsky’s theory, he stressed the importance of interacting socially and how an individual function s with the setting context, and concepts that are fundamental to the social work practice. There are two implications of Vygotsky’s theory. First, it enables appreciating the diverse cultures, and how an individual thinks and how he perceives things from one culture to the other. Additionally, Vygotsky’s theory considered the reasoning nature and solving of the problems when they culturally created. This focuses on the family importance and the influence of the society on ideas of human development. Consequently, another implication of Vygotsky’s theory, is that a person can promote his own cognitive development by looking interactions with other people who can assist in drawing them to highest degree of functioning within the zone of human development. Therefore, children can easily learn through the interaction with other people around their environment who are more skillful than they are (Green 1989). Vygotsky theory proposed various kinds of parenting that are qualitative in nature. Parents can either be authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive. The parents who are considered permissive , they do not exercise control or even make demands out of their children based on the way they behave. Although the parent create warmth towards their kids, their kids normally end up performing poorly in academics. Conversely, the authoritarian parents are very strict but they are not for the interpersonal dialogue, as they exercise control over the behavior of the children to a certain standard and they demand an absolute obedience. During the process, they show minimum warmth towards the children. The outcome of this parenting styles poor performance from the children. The authoritative parenting style makes an effort in guiding the children through action rationalizing, encouraging interpersonal communication, at the same time cooling the pressure between him and the children. The parents tend to help the children to experience the sound reasoning, self-confidence, and empathy, which are associated to high performance academically. Parenting Style Theory Vygotsky’s theory supports the correlation between the academic performance and the parenting style. Describes that parenting style is a big contributor to the behavior of a child. Those parents that are described by effectiveness and support their children, they tend to encourage their kids to perform well academically and explain the importance of education. Therefore, children under the authoritative parenting , tend to perform better in school and attains the overall wellbeing. Parents who are considered to be authoritative recognizes when their children are improving or when they learn new materials and they show acknowledge satisfaction when anything is done through working hard. These kind of parents are never angered by the mistakes their children do, instead they desire their children to acknowledge the mistakes to be part of a learning experience. Academic achievement of the student. The engagements can be taken to the commitment level, commitment, effort, and energy that the students put into the activities of learning. According to researchers conducted, the engagement of an adolescent student in the activities of academics, has a crucial role on the achievement in academics. Students having higher engagement in academics, perform highly in their academic work. The paper recognizes that the involvement in the activities of school is a mediating construct that links the parenting style with the achievement in academics of the children. The theory is supported by various research and found out that the engagement of the children mediated the parent school involvement on the academic achievement. Evidence is still lacking to support the belief that engagement in school has a crucial Impact on the factors like the style of parenting, school variables, in addition to the personal characteristics. The below study examines the correlation between the parenting style and the academic performance. The objective of the correlation was to describe the style of parenting , academic performance, and the academic engagement. It also finds out the correlation between the parenting style, the academic performance, and the academic engagement of the respondents. The research design used was based on the correlational research design and descriptive research design to find the correlation between the factors (Green 1989). In addition, the study involved data collection to look for the outcomes of the research questions. The study population were students from high school. Consequently, the study determined the effect of mediation on the correlation between the academic performance and the parenting style in California. The parenting style for students was measured using the Parental Authority Questionnaires. PAQ was used because it is considered a reliable and valid tool that consider with various items having the three subscales; authoritative, permissive, authoritarian parental styles. The subscales of the parenting style ranged from 0.7 to 0.77 in a pilot research and 0.78 to 0.83 in actual research. PAQ was tested to find the reliability and its validity among the samples. The academic performance of the respondent was determined using CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) obtained by the correspondents during the 2012/2013 academic year.
